The Era of the $9 Airfare Sale is OVER

In super boring but totally relevant news, today is the day that airlines must advertise their airfares inclusive of taxes and fees. While this means no more "$9" sales from Spirit and truly cheap "Cheeps" on JetBlue, it does usher in an era of not having to click all the way through several screens to find out the real price of a flight. Also, you probably won't be as quickly excited as before.
The official rules behind the move are here, and Virgin America has even gone so far as posting this notice on their site, just in case prospective passengers see the new, full-fare pricing and think "whoa, what the heck?"
So really this is just a note to keep this in mind next time an airline runs a fare sale and the prices display a little higher than we're all used to seeing. In the end, you're not paying more; you're just seeing the total earlier on in the booking process.

Greyhound Express Celebrates Its Birthday by Heading Down to Florida

About a year ago the old standby introduced their “Greyhound Express” service, and things must have gone pretty well—they’re now expanding things into the Sunshine State.
Utilizing their hub in Atlanta, the $1 fares and free on board WiFi is heading down to Florida. Cities like Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale will all be getting the Greyhound Express treatment, plus there’s even a new option heading to and from Fayetteville, North Carolina. The power outlets and extra legroom start rolling as early as this week, and the tickets are already available for purchase.
The Mega Flight Deal Returns: New York to Frankfurt on Singapore Airlines' A380

It's baaaack! In November, when holiday flight bookings were the name of the game, Singapore Airlines was beginning to drum up excitement for its upcoming Airbus A380 route out of New York-JFK. They started with a killer deal (which we know tons of you snagged): $599 all-in for economy between New York and Frankfurt, or $888 to go all the way to Singapore on the superjumbo.
If you were freaking out over buying holiday gifts and your travel plans then but you've got a clear mind and fresh outlook for 2012 now, then you'll be happy to hear that the deal returns, though it's gone up a few dollars.

Alas, we can't just let 2011 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics, encompassing everything from nudie scans to tarmac delays. Needless to say, we're ready for 2012, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2011 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.
With no JetBlue AYCJ Pass this year, the "sweetest travel deal" category was blown wide open. Many excellent offers intrigued in 2011, but there was one that repeatedly popped up and instantly inspired long-distance travel. That is ridiculously cheap airfare to Tokyo, Japan.
The thing is, Tokyo shouldn't have been so cheap in 2011! If it weren't for the Tohoku Earthquake and resulting tsunami early in the year (our 2011 Travel Villain of the Year), these deals would never have happened. To Hawaii. Non-Stop. With complimentary in-flight meals, pillows and blankets. That's all great and good, but the problem is these sale fares are going fast. Already we're seeing them raise to the $300s as planes fill for—believe it or not—autumn 2012. It just goes to show how needed this route is, since United née Continental is the only other airline making the 10-hour, 5,000-mile trek (and they dumped their free in-flight meal and other niceties almost one year ago).
The details: flights will be on an Airbus A330-200, with 18 first class seats and 276 economy (32" seat pitch in econ). Book 'em, Danno.
For a better perspective on how the new Hawaiian flights will go down, we met with the airline's CEO Mark Dunkerley this morning, mere hours after even airline crew found out they'd soon be flying to NYC.
