The Concorde may technically be dead, but airline romance isn’t, if British Airways’ Valentine’s deal is anything to go by.

A couple of years ago, the UK airline did a neat Valentine’s Day party kinda thing on flights between London and New York; this year, the celebration is on a more personal scale, though still rather spectacular: dinner for two on the Concorde.

The bad news? You’ll have to pay for it. The good? It’s for charity! Just bid for it in a blind email auction, and you’ll win dinner for two on board BA’s flagship Concorde G-BOAC at Manchester Airport, in the Runway Visitor Park.

Grandma and Grandpa might not be the typical Florida retirees, so maybe you should suggest something a little more interesting for their golden years. Raise your hand if you occasionally get a little nostalgic for actual film cameras and the days of tangible prints. See, that's the thing about the internet though, is we can't see you raising your hand or physically join in because while we love us some iPhoneography and DSLR fun, every so often we're still reaching for our throwback Lomography camera. And apparently so is the entire state of Virginia, since their freshest tourism endeavor involves pitting real photos from Lomo cameras against each other for chances to win all-expenses-paid, experiential trips to the state that is famously "for Lovers."

Contest

Here's the deal: the Lomographic Society has turned out a "Virginia is for Lovers" special edition of their newish 35mm La Sardina camera, and to celebrate, anyone with a Lomo camera is welcome to submit a photo to the contests to win a Virginia trip. There'll be a contest every month, starting now through December 2012, and each has a specific theme for your photo. Right now, it's "Love Surrounds: Show us the people that mean the most to you."

Instagram Your Way to $3,000 and a Trip to the UK with General Electric Aviation

In totally-weird-but-kinda-makes-perfect-sense news, General Electric's Aviation division is looking to send an Instagrammer to their UK facility to take some pretty jet engine photos. It's a legit travel photography contest, we swear, it's just that instead of asking for video pleas or portfolio from shutterbugs, GE is instead going whole hog into social media by embracing submissions via the instant photo-sharing app and a simple hashtag.

If you've not made the move to Instagram your mobile shots (as we recently did, from mobypicture), then allow us to explain the allure. Instagram is a free app available for iPhone only (sorry Android users). It allows you to—in under a minute—shoot a photo, give it a cool effect (such as making it seem vintage, from a plastic camera, or black & white), share it on a variety of networks (Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr, Posterous, Foursquare) and thus open it up for comments and appreciation from others.

It's essentially a mini-blogging platform just for photos, and GE has been enamored with Instagram since at least earlier this summer.

You know when an airline is getting big? Yes, when it has many destinations. Yes, when it frequently posts jobs for new flight crew. But...an airline is definitely getting big when it runs out of names for new planes and holds a contest asking for help from the traveling public. Several airlines have gone through this over the last many years, and now it's Virgin America's turn, and it could be your suggested name up on their bird if you can think fast.

New York: LAN Airlines Pulls an Oprah and Surprises 200 People With Flights to South America

Have you ever been to a taping of The Oprah Show where she gave away something to the entire audience? We haven't, but we like to imagine that it was a bit like what we experienced last night in New York City, when LAN Airlines gave away roundtrip tickets to South American destinations to nearly 200 bewildered diners.

The big surprise went down at Nuela, a nuevo latino restaurant in the Flatiron district, when LAN flight attendants first sprung free tickets on only a few tables. But then the manager got hold of a microphone and told everyone else to look underneath their tabletops...
