How We Packed for Two Weeks in Singapore, in a Single Carry-on

Click to view the image larger
Last week when we hopped off to Singapore on the inaugural run of the Singapore Airlines A380 JFK-FRA-Sin, we tweeted a quick photo of our baggage before boarding. This is it. Yes, that's all of it for two full weeks of both business and fun; everything we need is there in an 18" four-wheel Titan hardshell carry-on and a lightweight "personal item" purse from Y-3, which comfortably fits both our laptop and DSLR.
Immediately after sending the pic, we were blasted with replies and emails wondering how we could pack so light and not be a backpacker or weekender. It's quite simple, really; practice makes perfect and we recently returned from three weeks around Thailand with almost the same set, except swapping a larger Filson Field Duffel for the Y-3 purse. See a pic of it for proof here.
In addition to practice, we pack by two rules: never roll or bunch anything (we fold flat and stack in a Flight 001 Spacepak) and if it all can't comfortably fit spaced out on a double bed, then some things still must be cut. Here's a full list of all that made it with us to Singapore in those there bags:

The Ballpoint Pen Baggage Break-in: VIDEO

In the travel industry, today is what's known as an exodus, where those who've been home all holiday weekend finally extricate themselves from the cocoon of family and friends and head back into the regular world. What that means is hundreds of thousands of travelers will again take to the skies, their luggage busting with foil-wrapped frozen leftovers and new techie toys. Which is why you need to see this short video.
This is freaking us out. Breaking into a bag using only a ballpoint pen? Sure, we knew it could happen, but what's so odd about this video is that we can't tell if they're trying to warn about or encourage doing this. Hey, if you lost your lock key, you can get in! Or hey, if you want to steal someone's panties, you can get in! Weird.
The easiest way to protect from a ballpoint break-in, we suppose, is just to bite the bullet and go for one of the hard-case luggages that latch closed, like Samsonite's Oyster line. As for us, we're just going to continute not putting valuable items in our checked bags.

New York: Yes, You Can Now Buy Elizabeth Taylor's Collection of Louis Vuitton Luggage

While it seems like the jewelry of Elizabeth Taylor goes on show at museums all the time, this round in New York City is different. On display through December 12 and then up for auction until December 17 are $150 million worth of Taylor's luxury items, including jewelry (of course), custom-made designer clothing, gifts from illustrious friends and—our favorite of all—Elizabeth's massive collection of Louis Vuitton luggage.
Christie's will be conducting the historical sale, most of which will be focused on the clothing (like Taylor's wedding dress for her nuptials with Richard Burton), so getting in on the accessories is a sweet bet. Vintage Louis Vuitton trunks are highly sought after, but a variety such as this rarely appears, and depending on interest in individual pieces, could sell for lower prices than it would cost to call up Vuitton and having a new one specially made.
If you'd just like to window shop, the collection is on exhibit at Christie's through the December 12, 2011 and you must purchase tickets to enter. Each adult is $30 and entrances are staggered so that the space doesn't get too crowded, and you have plenty of room to appreciate and get up close to each item. Get those tickets here. After this, much of the inventory will go into private collections perhaps never to be seen again, so just go.

Looks Like BWI Won't Be the Only Airport Getting Its Own TV Show in 2012

Do you recall the first ever time you watched The Travel Channel? We do. It was a special moment where we went from being stuck in a Sedona, AZ hotel on an uncharacteristically rainy day to being obsessed with watching the room TV for hours and hours. Nothing has changed; the Travel Channel still produces some of the most inspiring programming as far as armchair traveling goes (once they got over that summer where it was like, Las Vegas show after Las Vegas show).
For 2012, the outlook for addictive series looks very good. Of a slew of leaked shows to debut next year, we're mostly salivating over two:

“Baggage Battles” (six half-hour episodes)
This half hour series follows three teams of savvy “auction specialists,” who travel the world looking to snatch up unclaimed and lost personal property in an attempt to turn huge profits. Follow these specialists as they travel to some of the most important and unknown auctions, where pickers and resale experts bid on everything from lost luggage to abandoned personal property to seized goods of unusual merchandise.
“Miami International Airport” (working title) (six half-hour episodes)
Go behind the scenes at one of the busiest airports in the country. “Miami International Airport” features an unprecedented cross section of an exciting airport staff as they deal with the stresses of getting over 100,000 strangers through its airport safely, every day.

A ha! So it looks like BWI won't be the only airport to have their own show in 2012. And if you're into hotel shows as well, HotelChatter has the hot goss on another of Travel Channel's upcoming offerings: "Hotel Impossible."
