Listen In On Air Traffic Control From Your iPhone

Noting that Labor Day weekend means one of the busiest travel times of the year, we're tuning in to something other than our iTunes on our iPhone. It's a newish app, released this summer, and it comes from the great people behind LiveATC.net, which lets you tune in to streaming air traffic control at select airports around the world.
At $2.99, it's the most expensive app we've bought, but there's just something exciting about listening in on JFK's Tower as flights depart and arrive for everywhere from Nice, France to Rochester. A few mornings ago, we even caught the air traffic controllers wrestling with some Coast Guard traffic and the occasional helicopter.

Dopplr's iPhone App Tracks Trips And Doles Out Tips

While it's beginning to seem like you aren't a relevant, modern business if you don't have an iPhone app, the latest to join the club just seems like they should have had one all along. It's Dopplr, the trip detail-tracking website which we've been using to plot our travel hops since it was still an invite-only site.
As Dopplr moves toward incorporating more Yelp-like content of recommended restaurants and more, the site and app even welcomes those who haven't created a trip profile, since now and then everyone just needs a little help making decisions in a foreign place. Utilizing the iPhone's GPS function, the Dopplr app will spot you in the world and reveal great places to dine, sight-see, and sleep as recommended by other Dopplr users. But it also deals out the features we've come to know and love about the Dopplr website:

An iPhone App For the Frequently Lost: Acrossair

How great would life be if you had a kind of built-in GPS, which when you were lost, would activate and show you visual directions on how to reach the nearest subway stop? Well, life must be pretty great then since a British company is one of the first to do just this using the new features of an iPhone 3GS.
Mainly utilizing the compass and video camera of the 3GS, the acrossair application works by displaying the distance and direction of London tube stops, shown as little info bubbles laid atop the live camera on your phone. It's augmented reality, and boy is it awesome.

Tahiti: Make A Short Video With Your New iPhone, Win A Trip To Tahiti

We haven't even gotten close to seeing a shiny new 3GS iPhone yet, but the tourism peeps over in Tahiti have already got a contest running using the new iPhone angle along with the bad economy. It's the Invest In Your Love contest, which says it's better to invest something in your relationship than stocks or bonds, and they just might be right.
Basically, the contest involves creating an 3-minute or less video about why you and your significant other(s) deserve a vacation in Tahiti. Round One has already closed—in fact you can already vote for the best video of those—but for Round Two, Tourism Tahiti is encouraging participants to shoot a video with their brand new iPhone and submit it to the competition.
If you create the video that gets the most votes, you'll win airfare to Tahiti, a week's accommodation spread over two different islands, and breakfast and dinner each day. Videos thus far have used everything from talking dogs to long-lost love strategies, and the good news is if you need a bit of extra practice to improve your iPhone videoing skills, there are six rounds of the contest so you can enter as late as November.
Related Stories:
· Invest In Your Love Contest [Official Site]
· Tahiti Travel Guide [Jaunted]
