If you're looking for a good excuse to head to San Diego for a girls-only weekend, then the San Diego Women's Film Festival is probably a great one. The well established event is celebrating its sixth year of supporting female filmmakers and this year looks to welcome over 400 independent films.
From October 2 to 5, the festival seeks to illustrate positive messages about relevant social issues. The films will focus on ideas relating to ethnicity, class, culture and gender. Be sure to note your favorite, as the festival has screened some films that have gone on to win Oscars. Wrap up summer and welcome fall in the stunning Western Rocky Mountains at the 24th Annual Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival in Wyoming. Much more than your standard, simple art fair, this one runs from September 4-21, with everything from Native American art to cuisine to music to gallery walks to workshops; in all, more than 50 events will take place over the 18 days.
Some highlights? The "Taste of the Tetons," which allows visitors to sample tons of food, dessert and wine in historic downtown Jackson (tickets are just $1 each). Or the QuickDraw Art Sale and Auction, where 30 artists create original works on-site and spectators can then bid on them.
There will also be tons of opportunities to view and buy Western art, jewelry and even to take in a Jackson Hole Cowboy Jubilee Historic Ranch Tour where you can feast on local barbecue, hear cowboy tunes and listen to area ranchers describe their daily lives. New England is home to the largest population of Cape Verdean immigrants and descendents of immigrants in the country. Celebrate this tiny Atlantic outpost at the Onset Cape Verdean Festival on Saturday, northeast of New Bedford, just south of Cape Cod.
The archipelago off the west coast of Africa has given us Damon Dash and the NBA's Ryan Gomes, but the fest serves as a de facto reunion for far-flung Cape Verdeans who may have roots in the same town.
Break it down to traditional morna music (a blues-like form often incorporating violins and clarinets) and fuel up on the sausage and corn dish cachupinha.

You probably associate movies with Los Angeles, but we're here to tell you that the 2008 San Diego Film Festival is out to prove it can represent on its own.
Running September 25-28, the festival offers the usual in darkened-room entertainment, but also brings the fun. In fact, it was named best party festival in Chris Gore's Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide. The parties will be going right from the start at the Ivy Hotel, and there's no need to be a VIP to attend: All day pass holders will be admitted.
