When the US Goes Green Tomorrow, Where Will You Be?

Have you fished out your bicycle from underneath the swim noodles in your garage and aired out that old T-shirt with the recycling logo yet? Get a move on, buster, as tomorrow is Earth Day 2009, with green awareness events planned in every major city in the United States. Urbanites are especially encouraged to get out and say "hey" to Mother Nature, and thanks to Treehugger's list of the "10 Best US Cities to be in for Earth Day, they can, without too much thought beyond shouldering a reusable tote bag and heading out.

While the list is full of some surprises (Los Angeles, really?), we mainly think it's a godsend in terms of exhaustive event listings for the big eco players like their top five cities: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Washington DC, and number one New York City. From tours of water treatment plants to green tea parties, there's an eco-event to suit everyone's tastes, so long as that taste leans to the green.

How to Celebrate Earth Day At The National Parks

So Earth Day is tomorrow, and unless you have a standing appointment with Smokey the Bear or other woodland creatures—you’re going to need something to do. Hanging out at the local park or picking up some trash is a start but there’s a lot more action going on at our National Parks. So pack some granola and your trendy BPA-free water bottle and get hiking.

The Zoos Will Be Partying on Earth Day

We know, we know, every day is Earth Day. But only starting Monday will zoos and aquariums around the world be celebrating Mother Nature as part of the "Party for the Planet" initiative, which connects the 150-plus members of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums.

Party animals can hop from state to state all week for free concerts, games and even organic food. This weekend, the Dallas Zoo debuts a new alligator exhibit called "Ghosts from the Bayou" as part of its four-weekend spring festival, Dallas Roars. The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport offers free admission on Earth Day and a six-hour scavenger hunt. And X-Men hero Wolverine, who is actually an endangered species, will show up for photo ops at the Chattanooga Zoo on April 25, which also features mural-making and free seedlings to attendees.

Annals of Travel Booties: Biodegradable Booties for Earth Day

We admit it. We've gone through the airport security in bare feet. Several times. We can't help it if our cute but comfy plane outfit requires the look of cute but comfy flats sans socks. And frat boys who live in their Rainbow flip-flops, you know what we're talking about.

Yes, we've thought about the bacteria lurking around the x-ray machines but really, it's just about a minute, right? We wait until the last possible minute to take off our shoes and then scurry though that metal detector.

But as grossed out as we've been about being naked from the ankles down, we've never really contemplated putting on those booties to protect your bare feet when you go through airport security. Have you?

Seattle: Volunteer for Earth Day in the Olympic Peninsula

There are a lot people who want to do more for the planet than just turn off the lights for an hour. And many of them are turning to "voluntourism", which provides an opportunity to really make a difference and take a unique vacation, all at the same time.

In honor of Earth Day, Lake Quinault Lodge and Kalaloch Lodge in the Olympic Peninsula, about 30 miles west of Seattle, are offering special package deals for guests who want to take a volunteer vacation and help preserve their historic properties and public beaches.
