So It's All Our Fault, Huh? Feds to Auction Off Takeoff and Landing Times at New York Airports

The U.S. government is going forward with a plan to auction off some takeoff and landing slots at JFK, La Guardia, and Newark airports, claiming that market forces will help streamline air traffic and reduce delays. The Port Authority, which runs the airports, and several New York politicians oppose the plan, which they say is a poorly thought out experiment the administration is trying to get through before leaving office without weighing the full impact on companies and consumers. But why would the Feds want to tinker with New York area airports anyway? Because, as the AP points out, "roughly two-thirds of flight delays around the country are caused by backups at those airports." Um, sorry about that. But who's the real enemy here? Apparently, it's small planes.

Federal transportation officials say much of the reason for nationwide flight delays is that airlines have crammed too many planes -- and small planes -- onto New York runways.

Well, at least we have a scapegoat. Under an auction system, it seems like the bigger players would have a better shot at the primo slots, but nobody yet knows how this will all play out since it's never been done before. We'll keep an eye on the on-time rates after January 12, when the auction winners are announced.

Related Stories:
· Feds Go Forward With NYC Airport Experiment [AP via Yahoo!
Design Travel: Geek Out with Airport Signs

Showing up at an unfamiliar airport with precious little time to make it to your next gate can be a harrowing experience. At times like this, the airport's signage is your lifeline to clarity--but you don't want to waste time trying to decipher some haphazard jumble of misplaced directional arrows and hard to read text.
To show off some of the best designed airport signage in the world, Dutch design blogger Sander Baumann combed through Flickr to find the absolute best examples. From Seattle to Schiphol, Newark to Bengaluru, Baumann breaks down the science behind sign design.
It's not sexy (unless you're some text-obsessed designer), but it is darn interesting to understand the complex thought that goes into something so seemingly simple.
Related Stories:
· Signs of the Times [Men.style.com]
· Airport Signage: Photo Inspiration [Designworkplan]
· Design Travel coverage [Jaunted]

What Airports Really Need: Better Beer

It's nice that airports are classing up their dining options to please discerning gourmands, but what about those who just want a beer to steady their nerves before flying? Until recently, the beer menus at most airport bars didn't have much beyond the offerings of mass-market brewers. A new guide from cheapflights.com, however, suggests that lovingly-crafted microbrews are finally penetrating a market that's historically been the province of bland, generic lagers, pointing out fifteen U.S. airports where it's possible to enjoy a pint of good stuff - like Tree-Hugger Porter or Fat Tire Amber Ale - before hopping on your flight. The Beer Lovers Airport Guide highlights some of the best watering holes in airports like Boston, Portland, and Denver. And while it'll take more than a good pub to get us to the airport any earlier than we need to be, it will take a bit of the sting out of flight delays.

Related Stories:
· Beer Lovers' Airport Guide [cheapflights.com]
· Finding a Good Brew at the Airport [aviation.com via Yahoo!
