San Francisco's BART Enters the World of Augmented Reality iPhone Apps

Today is officially the first day of pre-orders for Apple's new iPad, and in honor of the day, we thought it appropriate to talk up another great iPhone Travel App, especially now that augmented reality is becoming more and more embraced.
The latest to make use of augmented reality with the iPhone 3GS is, to our delight, San Francisco's BART system. They've just released their app in conjunction with Junaio, to locate the closest BART station to you, and even see what and when is the next train is arriving. It works like most other augmented reality applications; you turn on the app, which opens up the phone's camera and utilizing the GPS to lay direction and transportation information over the scene you see around you, but on your screen.
But it's features go further.
You Might Not Be Able to Use In-Flight WiFi for Video Chatting Anymore

Tech writer and blogger John Battelle started something of an Internet snarkfest earlier this week, when his iChat to his two little girls, done during the middle of a United flight, was shut down by a security-minded steward. While using in-flight wifi for air-to-ground communication was in bounds, cameras were apparently verboten. Upon pressing for an explanation, Battelle was shown a United policy manual banning "two way devices," which the steward understood as video chat. Punchline courtesy of Gawker: "other in-flight wifi uses were OK, since terrorists don't tweet or email."
On one hand this has the feel of one of those urban legend TSA regulations, like the occasionally enforced TSA ban on security checkpoint photography that doesn't actually exist. On the other hand it might be like TSA's post-Christmas attack freakout regulations, which were real but stupid. "We're turning off the in-flight GPS so you won't know when we're close to landing, even though we're sitting you down exactly 60 minutes beforehand and you'll hear the landing gear lock about 20 minutes out." So which was it?

Ontario: Canada is So Hot Right Now, Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz Agree

For the past month or so, Daniel Craig has been in Toronto working on his latest film, Dream House. The movie, which co-stars Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts, is about a family that learns of a brutal crime committed against the former residents of their new home.
The "dream house" in the movie has been built in Gairloch Gardens in Oakville, Ontario. Thanks to an unseasonably warm winter, the crew had to spray fake snow on the house and surrounding land to make it look like a winter wonderland. Daniel Craig will return to Gairloch Gardens on March 19 and is expected to spend four or five days there shooting the movie's final scenes. Oakville has been buzzing over its brush with fame, and what exactly will come of that house they've built. The latest rumor is that they're going to burn the whole thing down when they're done filming, while others say that is actually how the movie ends and the house will be destroyed as part of the shoot.
Today, the cast, crew and their fake snow have been spotted at the VIA station in Guelph, ON. VIA Rail Canada offers service from points throughout the country, and as flying becomes more of a hassle, many are are taking advantage of their extensive routes. You can travel on the same train, in a sleeper car, from Vancouver to Toronto for about the cost of a plane ticket, and get to see the countryside while you're at it. No matter how good it is, or how much R & D has gone into making it as palatable as possible, it’s not like eating on the ground.
Where To Go with Fido: Searching for Pet-Friendly Getaways

Spring is almost here, and you know what that means? Aside from flowers and cool rain and all that, it means that you will be returning to the parks and dog runs with your pets. And now with winter winding down, we bet you and your pooch have some serious cabin fever. To remedy this, the fantastic blog offManhattan has rounded up a few excellent pet-friendly getaways from New York City. But what about the rest of the country?
You can always head out on the Great American roadtrip with man's best friend, or pamper them with a flight of their own on Pet Airways so they can meet you at your destination, but when it comes to trip packages specifically catered to the pet-loving family, it takes a bit more research.
We recommend starting with HotelChatter's coverage of pet-friendly hotels, or inquiring at your local independent pet shop for the latest gossip on getaways with your four-legged friends.
We want to know: where do you go with your pets? The final stop was in the Tuamotu islands, at its largest island of Rangiroa. This is the last island stop for passengers of the Aranui, but a quick stay and a resort called Kia Ora brought us back into "civilization."
Before leaving for Bora Bora, I made sure to take a look around Rangiroa, as it's a destination for pearl shopping. I took a trip out to the Gaugin Pearl Factory, where visitors learn how pearls are cultivated and what the Tahitian pearl look like: brackish black color, with hues of blues, pinks and green varieties.
Finally we disembarked at Papeete, Tahiti, our ninth island. After frantically exchanging contact information with the friends we'd made onboard the Aranui, my husband and I transferred to the airport, where we boarded our flight to Bora Bora, our 10th and final island.
Heaven on Earth, after the jump
