Almost six months ago, Southwest Airlines gave New Yorkers an outright gift: the Southwest Porch, a relaxing, open-air venue in the middle of the city at Bryant Park. During the day, workers from offices in Midtown would sit in the adirondack chairs and on the cushioned lounges to eat their packed lunches, and at night, they can return for a drink and snacks when the bar opens.
The Porch is a pleasant surprise for its lack of pretension and excess of good food choices (being from Top Chef Tom Colicchio' s 'wichcraft chain). We expected it to close down for the winter when the leaves began to fall, but instead the Porch has re-inaugurated itself via a winter menu and introduction of fire pits and slankets, the slankets in celebration of Southwest's recent SkyMall cover.

Western Australia: Flower-Spotting Down Under, Where Winter Is Spring

Winter in Western Australia isn't the cold and blustery season people in other parts of the world are accustomed to—in fact, it's more like spring. So it's little wonder that from June to September, tourists arrive by the plane-full to check out the state's famous wildflowers in bloom.
Western Australia's a pretty big place—think more than three times larger than Texas—and the tourism peeps there have designed a bunch of itineraries best suited to self-drive vacations.
With over 12,000 species of wildflowers to be spotted, we're talking more than just a quick trip to the florist. Cool ones include everlastings (they feel like paper and last, well, forever) and kangaroo paws, twisted red and green blooms which could belong on kangaroos if you use your imagination.
The season winds up with the Wildflower Festival in Kings Park, Perth, in September. As well as going haywire on the wildflowers, the park gets pumping with a music festival, cultural shows and related exhibitions. So if you're taking a Down Under winter vacation but want to skip the snow, start geeking up on your wildflower knowledge or at least getting your camera ready.
Related Stories:
· Wildflowers Western Australia [Official Site]
· Winter Down Under Starts Early at Mount Buller [Jaunted]
· Western Australia Travel Guide [Jaunted]

Toss snowballs, make a snow angel -- but you'll have to jockey with all the public school kids who got the day off for room on the hills.
New York: NYC Gets Down with Winter

It's widely known that New Yorkers do not deal particularly well with winter (hence the existence of Florida). So as the snow falls heavily this week, we're pretty impressed that New York is putting on not one, but two big events that embrace the cold. We're guessing last year's Union Square Session was a sort of success.
First up, this Thursday in East River Park is the Red Bull Snowscrapers event, a mini-X-Games competition that brings in 17 of the world's best snowboarders (read: Shaun White and 16 guys you've never heard of), along with live music from Anthrax and other Xtreme-approved bands.
Those who get inspired can head back to East River Park on Saturday for the Winterjam, a city-sponsored winter sports playground that includes a snowboard rail jam, an ice climbing wall and a 70-foot snow flume for sledding.
· Red Bull Snowscrapers [Official Site]
· Winterjam [Official Site]
· Winter Travel coverage [Jaunted]
Photo: [Red Bull]
