As the Northeast summer hits that part where the weather can hardly decide whether to be sultry and smooth or cool and crisp, a sure bet for enjoying either version is Ithaca, NY. Ithaca at this time of year is truly "gorges," at least if you take the advice the town's ubiquitous punning t-shirts. Luckily, the town backs it up with lovely gorges everywhere. Even the deepest aversion to wordplay can't diminish the beauty of a town where a wrong turn down any given street will leave you dwarfed by nature's majesty.

But you'll have to act fast as students are already filtering back in to crush the tranquil small town vibe with a tidal wave of emptied 30 packs and crushed red cups.

We're just jealous we didn't think of it first. A French couple is traveling to 80 wineries throughout the world, and has developed enough publicity buzz around their quest to convince vineyard owners to give them free bottles of wine. For charity, that is.

The pair leveraged its round-the-world trip for an altruistic purpose. Wineries they visit donate bottles, and when Nicolas and Geraldine return to their current home base in Spain, they will auction off the booty to raise money for Action Against Hunger.

They set out six months ago and have already collected 500 bottles, from vineyards in South Africa, Thailand, China, Australia, New Zealand, and Chile. Next on tap: Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru and the United States before returning to Europe to tour the vineyards of Portugal, Spain, Italy, and France.

Highlights include visits to the "floating vineyards" of Thailand, where stretches of land rise between narrow canals. They also learned to appreciate the importance of red wine in Red China -- a symbol of prosperity.

New York State's Finger Lakes is slowly but surely catching notice from wine travelers around the world for its top-notch Rieslings--one of the best wines for guzzling during the blazing summer months. And since the region is packed with wineries eager to convince you that NY wine can compete, its hard to go wrong with a tasting tour of the area.

The newest deal on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is the "Riesling to Visit" passport program: a booklet that entitles you and your vinophile friends to special Riesling flights at 28 wineries around the lake. At $10, its definitely priced right, though we wouldn't recommend trying to hit all 28 in one day. Some of the top bottlings can be had at Chateau LaFayette Reneau and Anthony Road Wine Company, so start with those.

Serious wine lovers can get even more than a buzz from the passport: Boozers who hit 20 or more wineries can enter to win a return trip to the Finger Lakes--DD included.
