Hilton Head Island: Hilton Head Travel: Going Where Everyone Goes

You've probably seen people with a shirt from Hilton Head's Salty Dog Cafe: It's the one with a dog wearing a yellow hat. The place certainly is a top tourist spot--and maybe even a tourist trap--but the island *is* for tourists. The cafe's just playing to the market.
Located within the Sea Pines Resort, it will cost you $5 for a day pass just to visit the place. Once inside Sea Pines you'll want to see the Hilton Head Island lighthouse in Harbour Town. The lighthouse was actually built as an attraction and just holds a shop inside; there's no boat protection here. Oh, if you want to go to the top, that's going to be $3.
Once you finally make it to the actual cafe at the South Beach Marina, you'll be greeted with waterfront seating. There's usually someone playing covers of popular beach tunes with people shouting out requests for their favorite Jimmy Buffet song. As the summer winds down so do the crowds, but if you want to visit when it's busy, go on October 4 and participate in the 13th Annual Oyster Roast. They're going to crack open more than a ton of oysters and cook 'em on the grill. The first ten customers even get one of those shirts.
Related Stories:
· Salty Dog Cafe [Official Site]
· Tourist Traps coverage [Jaunted]

Edinburgh: Irvine Welsh Hates Yups, Self

Irvine Welsh isn't loving the gentrification of his beloved Edinburgh, especially that in the old waterfront town of Leith, where many of his books were partially set: "What is it about yuppies and water anyway? It's the same everywhere -- Belfast, Cardiff, Liverpool and Dublin." As for Welsh himself, he currently lives in a very nice apartment in Dublin.

Related Stories:

· Trainspotting author rails against 'yuppiefied' Leith [Edinburgh News, via Bookslut]
· The Sick Boy Guide to Edinburgh [Gridskipper]
· Edinburgh and Leith Pub Guide [Edinburgh 247]

St. John: The Fourth on the Water: Part III

If we had boatloads of money to spend this weekend and still wanted to celebrate the Fourth we would head to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Not to miss out on an Independence Day celebration (they are still U.S. territory after all...) the islands host a week long affair complete with everything from donkey races to a mango melee. The third is their Emanicipation Day and they do their take on the Fourth with a Carnival style party and a parade and beach jam on St. John.

Hm. Something tells us that we wouldn't really miss the hot dogs and sparklers if we had a mai tai and a steel drum band.
Related Stories:
· USVI Events Calendar [USVI Official Tourism Site]
· Top 10 Places to Celebrate July Fourth [ShermansTravel.com]
