Brooklyn: It's 70 Degrees in New York City and the Tourists Have Reemerged

It's 70 degrees in New York City today, and before the flurries come again this weekend and next week, we hopped out with our WiFi card to work under the sun in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Sitting nearby the water taxi dock and the River Cafe, noshing on some chocolate-covered Peeps from the Jacques Torres chocolaterie down the street, we watched as busloads of international tourists emerged from their winter hibernation and explored Brooklyn—well, the yuppie neighborhood known as "DUMBO," or "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass."
It's like the birds returning from their migrations in the spring, when the tourists show up in their sunglasses. It's even more telling when said busloads are Italian, and they're looking up into the sun and sighing happily.
Next time you're in New York, you should make your own pilgrimage down to the Fulton Ferry Landing in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighborhood (if you haven't already), and savor the city in the spring and summer, especially now that they're readying to open a new section of the park. Perhaps you'll even catch one of the free outdoor films they show in the park, and then you'll really thank us.
Related Stories:
· Dining in Downtown Brooklyn: It's Always 1977 at Junior's [Jaunted]
· Travel Snapshots [Jaunted]

Zzyzx: Exit Here at Zzyzx. Yes, Zzyzx

If you ever find yourself driving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas on the 15 Highway, chances are you're going to come across the strangest exit ever, Zzyzx. We've long thought this was a name just for the heck of it, like, "Hey, let's us the last three letters of the alphabet in any way that we can." And the truth is not far from that.
According to its Wikipedia page, Zzyzx is a former mineral hot springs site developed by Curtis Howe Springer in 1944, who was later arrested for misuse of the land and for violation of food and land laws. Basically, he made up the word Zzyxx and it's pronunciation ("zi-zix.")
Today, the land is part of the California State University and it's home to the Desert Studies Center. And no, there aren't any In-n-Outs at this exit.
PS. Don't the mountains look pretty?
Related Stories:
· Jaunted's Top Three Tips For A Desert Road Trip To Las Vegas [Jaunted]
· Pick Your Departure Time Carefully When Driving To and From Vegas [Jaunted]

Mood Lighting Not Helping You Relax? Then Order Pain Relievers Off The Seatback TV

We've often wondered what we would do if we ever had a nasty headache strike during the middle of a flight and did not have our own Advil arsenal with us. We guess we could beg the flight attendants to give us some of their own stash (which we think might be illegal on their part) or we could ask our fellow seatmates, risking violations of seatmate etiquette.
But on Virgin America, they've taken care of that problem. We just discovered on our flight last night from FLL to LAX that the RED system offers headache, pain and sleeping pills from the brand Help, I Need Help for $4 each. Each packet contains 16 tablets. Not bad.
The pain relievers are located under the SHOP section of RED. Now if only they would offer "Help, I Need the Person Behind Me to Stop Poking The Seatback TV So Hard" pills.
Related Stories:
· Virgin America coverage [Jaunted]
· Travel Health coverage [Jaunted]

San Francisco: Tiger Spotting on a Recent Terminal Adventure

Last weekend, we found ourselves on an insufferable four-hour layover in the San Francisco International Airport's international terminal which is where Virgin America and JetBlue fly out of.
The problem was, we were booked on a flight out of JFK to Las Vegas except we couldn't make the morning flight and all that was left were flights that routed us through SFO. Yes, essentially we flew over Las Vegas, spent four hours at SFO and then flew back to Vegas. Don't worry, we got plenty boozed up to deal with it all.
On our terminal adventure, we decided to leave the security checkpoint and seek out the XpresSpa in Terminal 1. But after walking about a half-mile through the airport with at least another mile to go, we decided to scrap these plans and just head back to our terminal to drink. Lesson learned: Don't ever leave the terminal. Going back through security is somehow more hellacious than the initial examination.

As we learned the hard way last Friday, the day after Thanksgiving earned its ominous nickname for good reason. We decided to brave the crowds in San Francisco's Union Square on the busiest shopping day of the year, only to be shoved and given the occasional dirty look by those supposedly bubbling with the spirit of the season.
The madness was due in part to some of the bargains to be had, and the tree lighting ceremony that took place that evening. News vans, families, and tourists from all over elbowed their way past each other to secure a viewing spot, but by 6:30 that night, most decent vantage points were taken and onlookers had to settle for a place on the sidewalks across the street. Standing at the intersection of Powell and Geary that night, our only thought was, "This must be what hell looks like."
Check out the pictures, after the jump!

CA: Smooth Sailing (er, Flying) From SFO to LAX Post Thankgiving

Just after touching down at San Francisco International Airport last week, we noted how curiously smooth our travel was from one sometimes-hellish airport (LAX) to another. We're not sure if more travelers opted for the I-5 as predicted, but whatever the case, our trip in the opposite direction was just as uneventful.
This may have something to do with the fact that our flight home was on Monday evening, a full 24-hours after Thanksgiving weekend officially came to a close. The scene outside of SFO was quiet, and we caught a glimpse of some winter-themed projections on the main building. Those artificial snowflakes are the closest the City by the Bay will get to actual flurries this Christmas, unless aberrant weather conditions take over.
