Brooklyn: Movie Set Travel: The Departed's Brooklyn Roots

Maybe its that the parts of South Boston that still look like South Boston are hard places to both film and not get shot. Or perhaps Scorsese is physically incapable of making a film without some sort of connection to New York? In any case, The Departed is a Boston flick through and through (better accents than Mystic River, less... suck than Celtic Pride) but its dirty little secret is the large swaths of it that were filmed in deep dark blue Yankees turf.
For a dose of cinematic deja vu, head over to Brooklyn's longtime Polish stronghold and blossoming hipster enclave of Greenpoint. Make your brunch stop the Park Luncheonette at 334 Driggs Avenue, not too far from the Nassau Ave subway stop. The summertime open walls, street seating and great view of McCarren Park are a far cry from the menacing shadow cast by Jack Nicholson's Frank Costello in the diner and grocery scenes filmed at this location. Onscreen, it stood in for a Mom and Pop grocery on the take, but it takes a little squinting and a step inside to see the resemblance. Be sure to show up on the AM side of noon or expect to face a mob of asymmetrical haircuts with ironic t-shirts waiting to pile on breakfast nosh. The mozzarella and prosciutto omelette comes highly recommended and the french fries are exactly how they should be.
Another recognizable Brooklyn stand-in for Beantown turf is the Greenwood Cemetery. With 478 acres and close to 600,000 dearly departed, it might be hard to track down a stone inscribed "William Costigan" but these hallowed grounds are worth a walk for history buffs and those not creeped out by headstones galore. Its got Basquiat, Leonard Bernstein, and The Wizard of Oz's Wizard and is still taking customers looking for a fashionable place to die.
Related Stories:
· Martin Scorsese, The Departed Oscar Victory Tour Guide [Jaunted]
· Movie Set Travel: The Departed [Jaunted]
· Best Brunch Places in New York [Jaunted]

Boston: Martin Scorsese, The Departed Oscar Victory Tour Guide

On Set Photo at the Charlestown Navy Yard, June 2005
The Departed was a good movie, probably not Martin Scorsese's best--the man made Taxi Driver and Goodfellas you know--but none of that matters now because The Departed was voted the year's best picture, and Scorsese best director. The movie was filmed in Southie and Chucktown (South Boston and Charlestown) and in honor of the pictures Academy Award, we have thrown together a mini-movie set tour guide of Charlestown, where Jack Nicholson's character made his fictional home, and also where the cast and crew made their actual home back in the summer of 2005. Enjoy.
:: The Departed Quick Tour Guide ::
Frank Costello: [while eating crab] Do you know John Lennon? Billy Costigan: Yeah, sure, he was the president before Lincoln. Frank Costello: Lennon said, "I'm an artist. You give me a fucking tuba, I'll get you something out of it.
Where Frank Costello Would Eat:
Olive's
An upscale Todd English joint. A place to see and be seen dining with your significant other or having a power dinner. Even though Todd English joints are as common as Wolfgang Puck joints these days, this was one of the originals, and it still means something to eat there.
Side note: Donald Trump once rewarded his apprenti with an infamous dinner here that ended in Omarosa accusing some girl of racism.
Ellerby: [on Sullivan getting married] Marriage is an important part of getting ahead. It lets people know you're not a homo. A married guy seems more stable. People see the ring, they think, "At least somebody can stand the son of a bitch." Ladies see the ring, they know immediately that you must have some cash, and your cock must work.
Where Ellerby Would Eat:
Navy Yard Bistro
It is quite, small, and serves decent food in a really relaxed setting. Perfect place for a romantic like Ellerby.
Colin Sullivan: [to Madolyn] If we're not gonna make it, it's gotta be you that gets out, cause I'm not capable. I'm fucking Irish, I'll deal with something being wrong for the rest of my life.
Where Sullivan Would Drink:
New Sully's
Which means, Sully's on Main Street, not Union Street (the Union Street one is where Billy Costigan might show up). This place even serves pub food these days. There is a Golden Tee machine, which you know Sullivan would enjoy, plus the Sox are always on in the summer. This place is old school Townie, yet still friendly to newcomers--a rare combination.

Charlestown: Movie Set Travel: The Departed

Today's featured flick, The Departed, is one we're excited to see, mostly because of all the double living and mole-like spy oriented operations. There is nothing like movies like this to spice up your ordinary Friday.

The Departed revolves around young, undercover cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) who's assigned to infiltrate the local South Boston mob syndicate run by gangland chief Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). At the same time, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a hardened criminal, infiltrates the police department as an informer. As each man works his way up the ranks (and discovers each other) they run the risk of being caught and exposed and having to turn in their friends. Drama! Action! Finally!

As much of the film was shot in Charlestown, Mass, we offer you some great things to do in this hot Boston 'hood.

Where To Stay:
Hotel Marlowe
Ok, this one's not directly in town, but is a hop across the Charles, and offers awesome amenities like Sony Playstations in every room, safes big enough for laptops, and Wi-Fi. The Presidential Suite features a ginormous Fuji spa tub too-the perfect place to plot your infiltration.

Where To Eat:
Copia
In Charlestown's City Square this former Greek restaurant is now an Italian eatery. Copia is owned by Anthony Caturano chef/owner of Prezza in the North End. It has only been open since September 10.

What to See:
Bunker Hill
One of the most recognizable monuments, is scheduled to reopen Nov 1 after over six months of renovations. This 221-foot granite obelisk marks the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution back in 1775. Cool vertical photos are a must, and admission's always free.
