The 2011 Sundance Film Festival is right around the corner but if you can't make it to Utah , no worries as the festival is bringing its best films to a city near you.
The film fest will take place between January 20th and January 30th in Park City, Utah and will feature more than 200 new films including Kevin Smith's Red State and Morgan Spurlock’s documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold.
But this year, if you live near Ann Arbor, Brookline, MA, Brooklyn, Chicago, Los Angeles, Madison, WI, Nashville, San Francisco or Seattle, you won't have to leave home to get a taste of Sundance. On January 27, the Sundance Film Festival USA program will bring special screenings to each of these cities. ]]>
The notorious British street artist Banksy premiered his first film, Exit Through The Gift Shop, at Sundance this week. But, true to form, he didn't allow it to be listed in the fest's catalog nor did he tell anyone about its place on the schedule until last week. This is no surprise coming from an artist who keeps his identity and whereabouts under tighter wraps than most people in the witness protection program.
The film is about street art, but it is also about Terry Guetta a.k.a Mr. Brain Wash, a successful commercial street artist. In the '90s Terry was obsessed with capturing his life on video. At the same time, he was hanging out with his cousin, the street artist Space Invader, who worked nights in France and Los Angeles covering the town with pixel aliens. Terry quickly became obsessed with street artists and, suddenly, his two passions combined. This meant for the first time someone was capturing the best graffiti artists in the world (including Banksy) working. The problem was, Terry's film sucked, even though he tried really hard, he just couldn't pull it off. This is where Banksy stepped in and decided to turn Terry's footage into Exit Through the Gift Shop. ]]>
Katie Holmes is the talk of the Sundance Film Festival this year, and not just because she's flying solo in Park City, UT, but also because she has two films in the fest that are getting a lot of buzz. Yesterday, Katie was spotted at the premiere of The Romantics at the Library Centre with co-star Josh Duhamel and his wife Fergie. Kate also took some time yesterday to pose for photos with one of the film's other co-stars, Elijah Wood, who reminisced about filming the movie last year on Long Island. "One lunch break," Elijah said, "instead of going to lunch, we decided to have a party at one of the holding houses. There was a little iPod dock, and we played very loud music and danced. And the girls were amazing."
The Romantics centers on Laura (Holmes), the maid of honor at the wedding of her former college roommate Lila (Anna Paquin ) and the love of her life Tom (Duhamel). The wedding provides the backdrop for a reunion of their friends who had the nickname The Romantics. But, The Romantics isn't the only film Katie's touting at Sundance this year. ]]>
Most of the hipsters who attend the Sundance Film Festival spend the week on the slopes, in a movie theater, or mingling on Main Street, but there are some pretty cool, offbeat attractions just outside of Park City, UT that they're probably missing. Here's a look at a few of them:
Temple Square, Salt Lake City
Even if you're not Mormon (or a fan of Big Love) Temple Square is one of the most fascinating places you'll ever visit. Spread out over three blocks in downtown Salt Lake City, nearly 20 Mormon attractions, including the Salt Lake Temple, the Tabernacle, and the Family History Library, are open to the public for tours daily. ]]>
