New York: Shepard Fairey Celebrates 'May Day' in NYC

On Saturday night, Deitch Projects, located at 18 Wooster Street in New York City, celebrated the opening of their last exhibition, Shepard Fairey: May Day. The event, which brought out hundreds of Shep fans including Russell Simmons, was a far cry from the days when this once unknown street artist would have to hide from crowds (and the police) to display his work.
The exhibition features Fairey's latest pieces including tributes to Iggy Pop and Muhammad Ali. The show has also given the artist an excuse to install several murals around NYC, the largest can be found at Houston and Bowery, but it may not be there for long, at least not in one piece. Graffiti artists have been bombing the piece nightly, forcing Shepard to go back and fix it up several times.

McGee, a native Californian, began as a street artist known by the tag name Twist in the 1980s. But by the 90s, he had branched out and began creating paintings, drawings, and mixed-media installations that include empty liquor bottles, tagged signs, scrap wood, and metal.
Since then, McGee has become the most respected street artist turned legit artist (sorry, Shep) in the country and has had his work displayed in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Armand Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.
Despite his success, McGee is still known to tag a few buildings now and then because he feels Graffiti keeps him in touch with a larger, more diverse audience.
