New York: NYC's High Line Becomes The City's Own Personal Runway

Summer might officially be over, that doesn't mean that you can abandon a nice outdoor walk and sit back in front of the TV for the NFL seasons. As this photo from Flickr user ultraclay demonstrates, people are still out enjoying the sunshine and fresh (albeit a bit crisp) air on New York's newest tourist attraction: The High Line.
Although it opened back in early June, and we were there on opening day, the High Line has gotten progressively more popular as visitors and locals alike attempt to find alternatives to visiting the Met Museum or walking over the Brooklyn Bridge on a free day. We completely understand. New York might be one of the world's largest cities, and called "the city that never sleeps," but even the most enthusiastic fans of the Big Apple need something fresh to hold their interest. And we believe we've found it—for the next few years at least—in the High Line.
Related Stories:
· Surfin' The High Line: Opening Day At NY's Elevated Park [Jaunted]
· Travel Snapshots Coverage [Jaunted]

Barcelona: Learning To Take Proper Photos In Barcelona

Jaunted contributing editor JuliaB gives us the low-down on snapping experts pic in Barcelona.
If you’ve been to Barcelona, you already know it’s a lush place for photos. And for those first timers, here’s why – it’s got beach, it’s got mountain, and it’s got unabashedly photogenic architecture, from medieval streets to thoroughly modern towerblocks with Gaudi’s M&M-coloured buildings thrown into the mix.
My problem is (or was – because I shoot pretty mean these days) that I’m not a natural photographer. Luckily for me, British expat Dan Rose is, and two years ago he set up Barcelona Photographer, which teaches the likes of me how to take a decent picture on a three hour walking tour of the city.
Dan assumes that you’ll already have seen most of the main sites, so his official group tour goes round the less touristy parts of Barcelona, like the Raval district (one of the city’s more gritty areas, so feel free to flaunt those piercings and hold tight to your bag) and the backstreets of the Gothic Quarter. If you’d rather get crack tuition in shooting your top ten, though, you can hire him on a private tour and go where you like. But bear in mind that you’ll probably spend the first two hours queuing to get into La Pedrera.

Kyoto: Blossom Gazing and Sake Drinking Delayed

The unpredictable blooming of cherry blossom trees must be a real source of frustration for the punctual, orderly Japanese. Last year, the blossoms arrived early; this year, the prediction is they'll bloom ten days later than normal.
That means that Tokyo should have cherry blossoms by March 26, Osaka by March 30, and the mountains of Nagano as late as April 16. One of the really beautiful spots to experience hanamizake--drinking sake while looking at cherry blossoms--is in Kyoto, which should have its first blooms by March 29.
If you can get your timing right, this really is a magnificent time of year to check out Japan, and you only need to learn one word of Japanese: kirei. It means "beautiful," and we promise you'll hear it from one end of Japan to the other when the cherry blossom flowers finally arrive.
Related Stories:
· Watch and Weep [SMH]
· Japanese Cherry Blossoms Abuse Schedule [Jaunted]
· Embedded Travel Guide: Osaka [Jaunted]

NY: La Isla Bonita (of New York Harbor)

With Memorial Day around the way, folks in New York City are thinking more about getting out on the water than into some stuffy museum. But where to go to find a tropical island breeze and all of nature wild and free? We'd like to think Madonna would skip over to Governors Island National Monument in New York Harbor, which opens June 2.

Long a US Army post, the island--just a few minutes from Manhattan--just recently came under control of the state and the Feds. There's a sort-of back-room secrecy about the place, since developers and other wonky types are fighting over what to "do" with the island these days. (A Santiago Calatrava bridge is one idea floating around.)

But until that gets all sorted, it's easy enough to tour the island and take in some awesome views of NYC's Financial District. A ferry leaves from the Battery Maritime Building, which is just east of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. We'd be inclined to agree, seeing as how you'll probably have to hock your camera to pay the $75 admission. (We even called up to confirm that, no, cameras aren't allowed.)

But then a Jaunted tipster (Thanks!) dropped some photos taken from the Skywalk in our inbox. Yes, most definitely. As if the $25 fee for a holy stroll across the glass bridge wasn't bad enough, it turns out there's another overpriced fee you'll have to hand over to get there. It costs $50 to enter Grand Canyon West, a piece of the Hualapai Reservation that's closer to Las Vegas than it is to other Canyon entrances. This makes so much more sense as a Vegas attraction, but it's still a rip. Though we wouldn't really push Zion National Park as an alternative day trip from Vegas, it'll only take you an additional hour to reach. If you're into the national park thing, Zion is way cooler. Entrance there will cost you a fair $25, and basic camping is an additional $16.

Related Stories:
· Grand Canyon's glass Skywalk a Vegas safe bet [AZ Daily Star]
· Astronaut's small step opens Grand Canyon Skywalk [Reuters]
· Moon Man Takes the Lead [Jaunted]
