Greece Says Leave Your High Heels At Home

If you've decided that this is the summer you're going to party in Greece, you'd better check your packing list and take out your high heels.
Officials in Greece are trying to get stiletto heels banned at important archaeological sites because these evil heels are damaging the ancient stuff. To quote Eleni Korka, a director taking care of such ancient sites:

Female visitors must wear shoes that do not wound the monuments. These monuments have a skin that suffers and people must realise that.

Too many tourists is a bit of a problem at many of the ancient sites in Greece - a few years ago they did a big clean-up of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus theater in Athens and removed 59 pounds of chewing gum stuck under the seats in the process. For some reason they haven't thought of banning chewing gum a la Singapore, but the anti-stiletto movement is growing strong.
Related Stories:
· Women Banned From Wearing Stilettos at Ancient Greek Sites [Daily Mail]
· Will This Be The Summer You Party in Greece? [Jaunted]
· Greece Travel Guide [Jaunted]

But during the editing process we realized that a post like that could come off as condescending or off-putting, and nothing could be farther from our intentions.
Doc Martens: Travel Footwear Extraordinaire

For most people, travel involves a fair amount of walking, and it's the rare guidebook that doesn't advise you to pack at least one pair of comfortable walking shoes for your vacation. Naturally, the footwear industry has a slew of high-tech, lightweight urban hiking boots that are designed for comfort and support on the cobblestones, gravel roads, and concrete sidewalks of the world, but for my money, there's just no improving on the original. With a history that dates back to the 1940's, the Dr. Martens shoe company has always created footwear that's rugged, practical, and almost accidentally stylish. Its iconic boot, the Dr. Martens 1460, first gained popularity with postmen, factory workers, and transport unions when it was released in England in 1960, but it wasn't long before skinheads, mods, punks, and other subculture rockers made the brand their own.

New York: The Sneaker-Restaurant Trend Marches On

Two is a trend when it's this random. What's up with faux-restaurant sneaker shops? First, Philly starts selling sneakers from an undercover Chinese joint, and now New York's latest sneaker shop is disguised as a soul food counter.
At SoleFood NYC, you can check out rare Nikes or bring in your own sneaks to be customized by local graffiti artists. The sneakers are stored in deli-style display cases, and you can try them on while hanging out at diner-style booths.
SoleFood NYC does one-up the Philly joint: On Sundays, they even operate as a bit of a real restaurant, too. You can take your new kicks home along with a takeout container full of collard greens, candied yams, and other soul food goodies.
Related Stories:
· SoleFood NYC [Official Site]
· Secret Sneaker Shopping: The New Speakeasy [Jaunted]
· Sneakers coverage [Jaunted]
