Austin: SXSW Survival In Three Easy Steps

Whether you're catching some panels for work in the interactive segment, staying up all night to hear your favorite bands or hoping to give Jason Segel a hug at the premiere of "I Love You Man," Austin's South by Southwest can sure take the wind out of even the most ardent traveler. That's why we've boiled our SXSW tips down to three easy lessons -- plus, you only need three chords to make a good rock song.

Hydrate or die trying. The Porta-Pottis are scary but so are IVs. The local BBQ may be delicious, but it's not going to help you keep all that water in. And no, beer does not count towards your daily quota of water. Alternate drinks with water during the day; you can stop at night if you feel self-conscious.

Austin: Fun Fun Fun In Austin This Weekend

Austin becomes the center of the indie rock universe every spring for the South by Southwest music festival. But while that 15-year-old fest has grown pretty unaffordable for anyone who doesn't own a record label, another Austin festival is stepping up to the plate with something a little more every-rocker.

The Fun Fun Fun Fest, now in it's third year, takes place this weekend in Austin's Waterloo Park. FFFF doesn't have SXSW's 1,000-plus bands, but they do bring a pretty stellar lineup this year, with indie A-listers like The National, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Minus the Bear, and ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead.

And with tickets starting at $25--including free after-parties around Austin--we might have a reason to start moving our annual Texas trip to November.

Austin: Missed Connections in Austin: Our Second Annual SXSW Edition

By now the hipsters who've had their Converses on since 4 am have probably set foot on Texan soil by now. Just like last year, we're stuck at points euphemistically northward, but by golly, go down there and enjoy yourselves, kids!

Especially if you're pining after the Bank Ninja. And while you're at it, find a song to sing for your own at one of these local hot spots:

Beauty Bar :: This multicity chain is a great place to get a cocktail and a manicure together--and if you're lucky, a boy named Raif. 617 E 7th St.

Doc's Backyard :: If the tables are scarce for $2 burger day, it might be your chance to meet a cutie. 5207 Brodie Ln.

Jolt 'n' Bolt :: Stay long enough to fill up on coffee and get an unmarried hottie to go. 3724 N. Lamar

The Sundance of the Southwest is just over two weeks away, and it's time to get your plans finalized for SXSW. Registration, while pricey, is still available, and you can get a pass to see all the music stuff until Monday, March 10. (It'll "only" cost you $650!)

To get you in the spirit, we've cherry-picked a couple Austin spots worth checking out. SXSW runs from March 7-16.
