Chicago: Eggs Benedict And Olafur Eliasson At Chicago's MCA

We luckily escaped New York City this last weekend for Chicago, just missing tornado warnings, hail, and the threat of having to stay inside for two days. Instead, on the lakefront here in Chi-town, we found a paradise of sun, brunch, and modern art. More specifically, we made a bee-line for Sunday brunch on the terrace at the Museum of Contemporary Art, which currently has an exhibition of Olafur Eliasson's works.
Olafur, in case you missed his waterfalls on the East River last summer in NYC, is something of a large-scale, light-and-color genius, and so pairing his 360-degree light room, prism hallway, and misting waterfall with eggs benedict is our highest recommendation for summer brunching in the city.
The exhibit, entitled "Take Your Time," spans fifteen years of Olafur's art, utilizing his architectural, engineering and lighting skills for constructions which, "at once eccentric and highly geometric, use multicolored washes, focused projections of light, mirrors, and natural elements such as water, stone, and moss to shift the viewer's perception of place and self, foregrounding the sensory experience of each work." It'll be on display at the MCA until September 13, and is way better than the waterfalls in our humble opinion.

New York: OMFG Travel: One NYC Waterfall Now Operational!

This one's on Pier 35 on the Lower East Side; two others are in Brooklyn, and a fourth is set up on Governors Island.
Related Stories:
· First Photo of an NYC Waterfall Turned on [Curbed]
· NYC Harbor Tours Are Already Cruising [Jaunted]

New York: NYC Harbor Tours Are Already Cruising

You'll have to wait until mid-July to see the outrageous waterfalls/public art installation of artist Olafur Eliasson, but tour operator Circle Line Downtown is already running this season's batch of New York Harbor tours. This month, boats sail on Fridays and weekends, and daily cruises start in April.
We know, we know, it seems soooo touristy. It sorta is. But when we took a Circle Line cruise last year, we were surprised by how cool it was. Besides, tours only last an hour, so you can quickly head to some kind of hipster party to re-up your street cred once you're back on terra firma.
As for those waterfall cruises, Circle Line will offer special 30-minute floats out to see the art, narrated by Eliasson himself. Tickets are $10, and it's the only way to see the falls up close short of chartering your own boat.
Related Stories:
· Circle Line Downtown Waterfall Tours [Official Site]
· NYC Waterfalls [Official Site]
· Public Art coverage [Jaunted]
[Photo: The New York City Waterfalls (artist rendering), 2008 © Olafur Eliasson, 2008]
