Wilmington: Ohio's Gonna Mail Itself To You

Among the top states stung by layoffs was a nasty surprise: Little Ohio bested states like Texas and Michigan to capture fourth on the list of states with the most layoffs in January. (California, New York, Pennsylvania: try not to gloat.)
The Columbus police department, Limited Brands and Chevron have all shed workers, but the hardest hit may have been the 12,000 residents of Wilmington, Ohio, 5,000 of whom worked for shipping giant DHL which plans to close its air cargo hub this year.
While many of those people probably want to send DHL's leadership a choice package, but they'd be better off sending themselves
Drive -- Pick up a Caddy 4-door from a local Enterprise. It's a $304/week rental, which should get you out of town (and really, anywhere will do).
Dance -- Get tango lessons from the pros in Buenos Aires, Argentina: We pulled up a $494 r/t fare on American today from Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky International Airport. (Prefer to falar português? How about Salvador, Brazil for $337?)
Drink -- At the French Manor Bed and Breakfast in the Poconos in Pennsylvania, $595 buys you and a lucky guest a weekend away of wine ("welcome glass" Friday), wine (tasting Saturday afternoon) and more wine (a bottle to take home Sunday). With every glass, your last position becomes a distant, fuzzy memory.
Related Stories:
· California had most mass layoffs in January [San Francisco Business Times]
· Nonprofit feeds 5,000 in Ohio town after layoffs [CNN]
· Laid-Off Travel coverage [Jaunted]

If you're cruising the Midwestern states on a road trip, there's more than meets the eye when it comes to attractions. Sure, it's known for flatness. And agriculture. But there's so much more going on below the surface...literally.

In Illinois, Iowa and Ohio you can find your pick of caves to explore, if you've got a thing for stalactites (mnemonic: they're 'tied' to the ceiling) or stalagmites (you 'might' trip over them) or if you just want to explore a place that is a constant refreshing 54 degrees Fahrenheit.

It must be getting serious between Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo--as serious as it can get with two intellectuals of their caliber--as they flew back to Nick's hometown in Ohio last week so Vanessa could spend time with Nick's family and friends.

While hopping around Cincinnati with Nick's brothers, Vanessa gushed that she, "felt very much at home," there. Maybe she's always been a Bengals gan? She was also spotted guzzling a cold can of Miller Lite (tucked away in a can-cozy no less) aboard a baot with Nick and friends. Those Lachey's are a classy bunch.

Nick and his lady are now back in NYC camped out at Chez Minnillo for the time being...

Related Stories:
· Vanessa Minnillo, Nick Lachey "In Love" Labor Day With Folks [TT Post Chronicle]
