NV: A Different Way To Go Nuclear In Las Vegas

Nevada probably isn’t top of many people’s lists for road tripping (in fact we lived in Vegas for 18 months without ever venturing north, thinking Arizona and California were better bets), but when we had to drive from LV to San Francisco last week, we took the opportunity to make a drive we’d always thought about doing – Vegas to Reno.
One of the first things we came across on the road was the Nevada Test Site, the site of hundreds of nuclear tests from 1951-1994, just 71 miles northwest of Vegas. It's where tourists from Vegas used to be driven out to see the blasts - you could even see the mushroom clouds from Fremont Street in Downtown Vegas back in the day.

Chernobyl is So Hot Right Now: Nuclear Disasters Pique Tourist Interest

On April 26 this year, Ukraine will remember the 25th Anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. No one knows exactly how many died as result of the radioactive fallout and the story of what exactly happened to cause the plant's explosion is so riveting that we can easily get sucked into reading just the Wikipedia page and links for hours. Thus, it's no surprise that Ukraine has opened the Chernobyl site to tours; it's in our nature to be curious about such macabre places.
As it turns out, the recent tourist focus on Chernobyl couldn't have come at a better, if tragic, time. With the situation at Japan's earthquake- and tsunami-damaged nuclear plants (especially Fukushima) having reached frightening disaster status, the public is reading up on nuclear energy and the history thereof, including tragedies like experienced at Chernobyl.

New York: Kaboom! Manhattan Project Opera Hits New York; See Nuclear Test Site For Real in New Mexico

Even for regular opera-goers, the Met's production of the new opera "Doctor Atomic" is big--and not just because it contains a bomb. The ambitious piece, written by Peter Sellars, had its world premiere in San Francisco in 2005, and attempts to depict the first ever nuclear bomb test conducted by J. Robert Oppenheimer without resorting to movie-style special effects, filling its characters' mouths with lines from the Bhagavad Gita and poet John Donne.
It was for Donne that the test was named Trinity, represented by the goosebump-inducing Act I finale. All that, and it's an opera too! You can catch the ambitious, extensive "Doctor Atomic" at the Metropolitan Opera through November 15.
