New York: A Hell of a Halloween Weekend in New York

Halloween is always a party in New York, but this year several forces combined to make it even wilder than usual. First of all, it happened to fall on a Saturday this year, drawing that many more people out of their apartments and into the night. Second, the Yankees played the Phillies in Game 3 of the World Series - and won! - giving the barroom crowds a grand reason to order a few ill-advised rounds of shots. And third, the New York City Marathon took place the very next morning, giving the Halloween revelers some great human drama to wake up and soothe their hangovers to. Add to that the extra hour of weekend we got because of the end of Daylight Savings Time and you've got a city with every reason to cut loose.

New York: Run, Ryan, Run!

Last year it was Katie Holmes. This year Ryan Reynolds was the star to beat at the ING New York City Marathon. And hey, he didn't do so badly either!
Reynolds, who ran with Team Fox in support of his father who has Parkinson's disease, ran a 3:50:22 race, about an hour and a half ahead of Holmes' 2007 time. Other celebrity runners included Howard Stern's wife Beth Ostrosky and Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug. Victoria Beckham was rumored to run but appears to have dropped out. Reynolds' new wife Scarlett Johansson was somewhere out on the course, but with all the spectators no one seems to have spotted her.
But the race was not run without a tragedy: A Brazilian runner collapsed at the finish line and later died at a nearby hospital. Two other runners who had heart attacks on the course were rushed to the hospital and are believed to be in critical condition. And a group of New York Road Runners completed the course in memory of Ryan Shay, who died last year during Olympic trials the day before the marathon.
Related Stories:
· 2007: Katie Holmes Survived The New York City Marathon [Jaunted]
· Friends run NYC Marathon in memory of Ryan Shay [Newsday]
· Celeb Travel coverage [Jaunted]
