Playing the air guitar is more than just a casual bit of fun for some however, and they've organized the Air Guitar Championships. This weekend sees the regional qualifying battles in both LA and San Diego, with the winners continuing onto the DC nationals before reaching for air guitar gold at the international air guitar competition in Oslo.
To exercise your rockstar abilities without actually having to play any instruments, check out the tournament information and location, and maybe scout it for next year; this a serious sport, you know, you should train.

Munich: Long on Culture, Short on Sleep

Apparently Germans don't feel the need to sleep. That's the message we get, anyway, from the success of the Long Night of Museums concept. For nearly 10 years now, cities around Germany have picked one night a year when, after buying just one general admission ticket, you can spend all night visiting the various museums and cultural sites a city has to offer, connected by free shuttle buses and other transport.

Now, whether or not you really want to be reading about the history of German public transport at 3am, then taking a bus to the office for monument protection, the point is not that you want to but that you can. Munich's got its Long Night coming up on 21 October (you should know that this one only runs until 2am), so save up some sleep and hit the Bavarian streets and museums. You won't be alone.

Related stories:
Long Night in Munich [Go Travel News]
It's September, It Must Be Oktoberfest [Jaunted]

Munich: Getting a Leg Up in Munich

Munich and the rest of Germany may be overrun with visitors when the World Cup begins on the 9th of June, but at the moment, the city is just about ready for its close-up. Gary Lee of the Washington Post just visited Munich and Stuttgart for their Travel section, and he was pleasantly surprised to find places that locals recommended exist, and are better than many the old Munich tourist standards.

It's a spot-on point to make. Munich always struck us as a little too oompah-band-esque for our tastes; Berlin is as chic as Germany gets, and Munich just felt like the more expensive but less hip brother to the south. If you can find these cheaper places that are popular with locals, at least you won't be paying through the nose for your pork knuckles and steins of beer while you're in town.

Also cool is one of the events leading up to the Cup, the Night of Long Sports:

On July 2, the Long Night of Sports program will feature dozens of local sports clubs, including aquatic divers and horseback riders, in public sports demonstrations. Those who tire of watching will have the chance to participate in in-line skating, tai-bo, Nordic walking, gymnastics and other sports at various sites.

Sounds like more fun that the night of long knives, at least.

Related Stories:
· Germany's Perfect Match [WaPo]

So we're suckers for public transportation photos these days. What can we say? It's that combination of bright colors and fluorescent lighting that does us in every time, and this week is no exception.

The Munich subway figures quite heavily in effpunkt's photostream, as does the architecture of the Bavarian capital. We think of Munich as being a but fussy and old-fashioned, but these photos showsthat it can be (almost) as modern and stylish as Berlin. Thank goodness, there's nary a lederhosen in sight.
