Ride the Narrow-Gauge Rails of Scottsdale at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

Yesterday I recounted our adventures on Phoenix's new light rail line, whose recent unveiling marked the return of passenger train service to the area after a generations-long absence. But if you're willing to stretch the definition of passenger train service a little bit, modern-day Phoenicians have been riding the rails since 1975, albeit in a big circle. Located in Scottsdale, the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park is a mecca of sorts to Arizona railfans, with an antique carousel, clock tower, museum, train cars, railroad depot, extensive model train collection, and a full-sized (and unmoving) steam locomotive.
The park's biggest claim to fame is its tiny 5/12 scale train system (pictured) which chugs around the 30-acre green space in a meandering loop while carrying a few dozen eager visitors in tiny open-topped passenger cars. The mini train is especially popular during the holidays, when nighttime riders are greeted with a light display audacious enough to humble the Griswolds themselves, but it's also a good way to feel the breeze under the bright Arizona sun.
To be sure, the park is popular with families - little kids love their choo choos - but we encountered all types on a recent visit, from affable retirees recalling great train journeys of their youths to Scottsdale hipsters stopping by for a dose of retro on their way out to the bars. Okay, Phoenix, now you've got two successful passenger train projects. Keep them coming.
Related Stories:
· McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park [Official Site]
· Phoenix Unveils Fancy New Light Rail Line [Jaunted]
