You can only wear a crystal-encrusted lobster on your head so long before you start craving the real thing, and it looks as though pop star Lady Gaga is out to get it by purchasing a vacation home on the celeb-favorite island of Martha's Vineyard. WWD reported on the possibility late last night, and the fashion industry publication appropriately wondered if this means that the avant garde-loving Gaga is going preppy.

It was previously rumored that Gaga had her eye on a permanent place in the Hamptons, seeing as how she currently rents her $25,000-per-month mansion in Bel Air, California. But like the Obamas, Martha Stewart, and Bill Gates, the further out locale of Martha's Vineyard is just too attractive. President Obama might be making his first presidential visit to Pittsburgh today for the G20 Summits, but before heading off for some serious work-time, Mr. and Mrs. Obama hit up New York again for a couple days, creating mass traffic confusion, but some actual excitement when Michelle lunched at the famed Gramercy Tavern restaurant.

In all fairness, Michelle had to eat alone since Barack was not in town for tourist activities like usual, but instead addressing the United Nations. Gramercy Tavern is an excellent choice for the First Lady, even if she may have gone because the chef behind the restaurant also catered the UN activities. It is upscale, rather exclusive and hard to get reservations for, and is known for being a cheerleader of American cuisine.

We have truly entered the family vacation portion of summer, what with last week's National Parks free day and the anxiety of squeezing in trips before Labor Day. Although President Obama, Michelle, Malia and Sasha have spent their summer traveling around the world and taking in various tourist sites, they have also been working all the while. Thus, it's even time for the first family to call it quits for a bit and head to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts for some deserved rest and relaxation.

They'll even be renting a summer vacation home for the week-long break, but this isn't some cottage with a leaky canoe; it's the 28-acre, $35,000-a-week Blue Heron Farm on the island's southern edge. With the arrival of the Obamas, Martha's Vineyard has become the late summer celebrity vacation hotspot, as it's reported that the likes of Jay-Z, Beyonce, Oprah, Spike Lee, Pele (the Brazilion soccer star) and even the Clintons are also in town. ]]> JetSetCD 2009-08-24T09:34:40-05:00 http://www.jaunted.com/story/2005/7/25/10631/0477 Funnily enough, the Times did not pay us to head to Martha's Vineyard for the weekend, although we think we can offer up some cooler suggestions:

First off, don't drop $900 on a hotel room (we're sure you already know this). Seriously you want to stay "up island" as Vineyarders say, and you can find something cheaper, remote and way quieter up there. There are charming inns hidden everywhere--we recommend anywhere in West Tisbury/Edgartown (we say avoid somewhere in central Oak Bluffs like the plague if you plan on sleeping). A super cheap alternative is the hostel in West Tisbury (above). We know what you're thinking, uh, I already did that gig in college. Think again. It's often booked solid, the charming cottage is incredibly clean and spacious and you certainly won't be bunking with a bunch of Australian travelers. Clientele ranges from couples to families and we never once were concerned with the security of our stuff. They've got private rooms and family rooms. At $24 a night, it's pretty unbelievable and like a little familiar hotel. Save your money for seafood and a bike rental.

Don't even think about a Black Dog t-shirt, it's been done about a hundred times too many and will give you and every touring Harley rider way too much in common.

The Times' tips include hitting up the Black Dog Cafe (where you can grab a sandwich for a reasonable $5-$7), stopping at the country's oldest operating merry-go-round in Oak Bluffs, and pre-ordering your dinner lobster (and not fogetting to BYOB) in dry fishing town Menemsha.

For where to stay they recommend the Menemsha Inn & Cottages (North Road, Menemsha; 508-645-2521) $240 to $575 a night during the summer, The Harbor View Hotel (131 North Water Street, Edgartown; 508-627-7000) $330 to $950(!) in summer, and The Island Inn (Beach Road, Oak Bluffs; 508-693-2002) with rates from $190 to $375.

Some solid suggestions...although stay tuned for a little bit more unknown (& way cheaper) look at the famed island.
