Manhattanites will tell you that it's easy to find a great cup of coffee, a fun neighborhood bar, or an authentic ethnic restaurant. All you have to do is walk out the door.

What's not so easy? Hailing a cab.

That's why after several failed attempts and some mild frustration, we here at Jaunted have devised a no-fail plan to flagging down a yellow taxi, no matter where you find yourself in the Big Apple.

New York: New York's Black Attack

Production company/art collective Partizan recently announced that they are planning to unleash Jack Black on Manhattan.

Set to begin filming on September 6, Be Kind Rewind is an offbeat comedy written and directed by Michel Gondry. A sometime music video director (White Stripes in Legos, anyone?), Gondry also gave us the eternally awesome Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And who can forget the nod to NYC insiders in that film: A scene shot live during the midnight Barnum & Bailey elephant walk through midtown.

In this movie, shooting for under $20 million (so don't expect much security on set, Jack Stalkers...) Black plays a junkyard worker whose brain is magnetized, destroying the tapes in his friend's video store. The pair then goes on a tear through the city, trying to quickly re-make each of the ruined films (which include The Lion King, Rush Hour, Back to the Future and Robocop).

So for those of you enjoying autumn in New York, keep your eyes peeled for a cute chubby guy with a camcorder. You might just end up in his movie.

New York: Bikini Clad Boot Camp Leader

Alot of us had epiphianies after 9.11. However, how many of us actually did something about it?

Well, ex-Morgan Stanley i-banker Lauren Brenner did. In 2003 she opened a 6500 sq. ft facility called Pure Power Boot Camp in Manhattan's Flatiron district.

For around $37 a session or $900 for six weeks, Lauren and her team of former military drill sergeants will whip you into shape using an indoor replica of a military training facility at Fort Knox.

Ropes, ladders, walls, nets, and getting barked at by Lauren and her team of militants should be enough to whip even the most sedentary into shape.

If you don't see the results you are looking for, the hot girl in the camouflage bikini (that would be Lauren) will train you herself.

C'mon, there has to be a reality television show in here, dontcha think?

New York: NYC: the Week That Was

Here's this week's New Yorkology update, from Amy Langfield:

New York City is bracing for a series of "partial strikes" on its transit system, beginning as early as tonight on some of the bus lines serving the outer boroughs. The largest public transit system in the country could still come to a halt in coming days if the union and the MTA fail to agree on a new contract.

Even if there is a strike, Broadway and all the major museums plan to operate on a normal schedule. This includes the Museum of Modern Art, which just opened an impressive show on Pixar Studios. The largest animation exhibit ever featured at MoMA, it includes hundreds of preparatory drawings never seen outside the studio. Especially fun is the series of drawings, sculptures and collages of Edna from The Incredibles, showing her evolve through frumpy, extremely Asian, and Edith Head modifications.

The hot restaurant news is about when Mario Batali's Del Posto restaurant will open (possibly any day now), and whether it's going to be good, over-priced, or short on bathrooms.

New York: New York City freaks out over transit strike

As New York City has a collective nervous breakdown over the transit strikes, we'd just like to put in our two cents: a transit strike in the Big Apple is illegal. (You know, just in case the head of the Transport Workers Union reads our fair site.) Sure, we'd like to go on strike ourselves every time, say, our boss doesn't give us that extra salary or vacation we deserve...but we don't. Why? Because it's not the 1970's. And because we're not French. Things to ponder. Gothamist has the blow by blow.

New York: Marquee: too fabulous for you

Last week was the one-year birthday of New York City nightclub Marquee, which is--against all odds--still hot.

You weren't at the celebration? Well, that's because you're not fabulous enough. (Don't worry, we're not either.) Paris and Bruce and Lindsay and Britney: they're hot. Apparently, so are aging i-bankers desperately trying to recapture their youth by pretending that money makes you cooler. Scott Speedman? (Who?) Totally hot. Us? Uh, no. Guess we'll have to be content reading about the club in Page Six and attending boring private parties there that are over about four hours before the celebrities arrive. Sigh.
