Watch Out, EVA Air; Japan Airlines Has a 'Hello Kitty' Plane Too

The carriers over in Japan just can’t get enough of wacky airplane liveries and specialty paint jobs, and that’s fine with us because we can’t stop talking about them. Japan Airlines is the latest to reveal a fresh look, and it’s a brand new tribute to the Hello Kitty empire.

It’s not just all fun either, as this latest color scheme (for this plane only) is hanging around to bring recognition and awareness about cervical cancer. Japan Airlines, TOKYO FM, and Sanrio are all joining forces as part of the "Hellosmile Project." The plan is to support prevention programs with the plane—it’s a Boeing 777 with the registration number JA8941—as it flies in and around Japan and the globe for the next year or so.

Air New Zealand Paints Their Itty-Bittiest Plane All Black

YES—another all-black plane has taken to the skies. For the third time, Air New Zealand is honoring the country's rugby team—the All Blacks—with an aircraft painted in the team colors, which would be all black (plus a little white and gray to form the fern of the team logo).

The first AirNZ plane to get the treatment was a Airbus A320, then they upgraded to repainting a Boeing 777. This time, however, AirNZ has chosen the smallest of their fleet—a Beech 1900D, newly completed.

Keep a look out for the tiny black plane (and two more upcoming) buzzing its propellers on AirNZ's shorter domestic routes, such as between Blenheim and Christchurch.

So Cool: ANA Threw a Special Plane Party at Tokyo-Haneda

Okay, this is just plain amazing.

On Christmas Eve, Japanese airline ANA managed to get all of their airplanes sporting special livery into Tokyo-Haneda Airport at the same time, parked at gates one after the other. The planning and background teamwork behind making an event like this happen in staggering; we only wish ANA had devoted more than a small Facebook photoset to the day.

Stars of the tarmac on December 24 were the Pok�mon 747s, the 787 Dreamliners, the retro livery, Star Alliance livery and even more.

Just imagine if Southwest Airlines tried something like this. There'd be an Orca whale landing, followed by the state of Florida, followed by Bar Refaeli in a bikini (wait, is that plane still flying?).

Anyway, awesome job, ANA. Same time, same place next year?

Check Out ANA's Spiffy New Dreamliner Livery

The first livery for the 787s. Not the new stuff.

Japan's All Nippon Airways has been quick to create some fancy new liveries and paint jobs for their fleet of brandy new Boeing 787 Dreamliners. However, the painters and workers in the hangars are still hard at work, as it looks like they’ll be using yet another special paint scheme for their latest deliveries.

As ANA gets some more and more new planes they’ll mix up the liveries just a little bit. The fresh batch of Dreamliners—these are the ones that will likely be the first to hit the nifty fifty—will still have “787” scrolled across the side, but the colors will be more aligned with the traditional ANA designs. This will also be the more permanent look, so expect this color scheme to be around for quite some time.

Ninja Plane? This Air New Zealand 777 Gets Painted Jet Black

If a black airplane lands at night, do you even see it land at all? Okay that was kinda stupid, but all words pale in comparison to the awesomeness of the newest Boeing 777-300ER to be delivered to fun-loving Air New Zealand. It's the All Blacks-edition jet, the second plane in AirNZ's fleet to be outfitted in the black livery that's an ode to the rugby team All Blacks. One could even say the color is jet black.

The 777 is fresh off the Boeing assembly line in Everett, WA and lucky to start its life as the pimpest-looking plane in the sky. It's actually the largest plane painted noir, as the old Playboy DC-9 is long gone and AirNZ's other black metal is the smaller Airbus A320, confined to domestic itineraries. But this baby—this one with its three classes (four if you count the Skycouch)—this one is also flying further, like to LAX and London from Auckland.

This Airplane Has a Movember Mustache

In the only bit of positive news from Qantas this month, the airline has painted a mustache on one of its Boeing 737s. The mustache is to show Qantas' support for Movember and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. "Movember" has, over the last few years, become more and more popular around the world as a time for guys to grow a mustache to draw attention to prostate cancer. It's essentially the male version of women wearing pink during Breast Cancer Awareness month (which was October).

The Movember cause hits close to home for Qantas, as CEO Alan Joyce is a survivor of prostate cancer. His was discovered and treated, but he notes: "if it weren't for early detection, there is every chance I would have been dead within 10 years."

ANA is Keen to Launch New Budget Airline, 'Peach'

In case you were wondering where all the airline action is these days (you probably aren't, but we're going to tell you anyway)...it's in Asia. New airlines are popping up like pimples on prom night. AirAsia's got AirAsia Japan and Caterham Jet, Qantas is toying with RedQ and Singapore wants to Scoot. Oh, ANA (aka home of the first 787s) wants in one the game too, and they're launched a cute little airline called "Peach."

Peach is really happening, as they've just taken delivery of their first actual plane, a leased Airbus A320 painted in some hot pink and fuchsia livery. March 2012 is the projected go-time for Peach, which is based at Osaka's Kansai International Airport and planning to fly from KIX to domestic spots like Fukuoka and Sapporo, with international routes to follow.
