Peggy's Cove: Visiting a Rush-Rush Tourist Trap: Peggys Cove, Nova Scotia

If you have a chance to go to Nova Scotia's tiny fisherman's hamlet of Peggys Cove, about an hour's drive outside of Halifax, then you must go. It's a town that fulfills your desire to spend time in a quaint maritime town, but as much as we loved our recent stop there, there is a major issue with Peggys Cove. Tourists are bussed in and out, with maybe 1 solid hour to enjoy the place.
The entire population of Peggys Cove numbers only something like 50 people, but they spend the warmer months raking in the dough from the thousands and thousands of tourists who visit every week, both by road tripping on their own or by big bus tour. The majority visit thanks to the latter, but with typically only one hour to run a marathon over the rocks, seconds to take in the views, and split seconds to capture each perfect photograph.

Bald Head Island: Jon and Kate Plus Separate Weekend Getaways

Jon and Kate Gosselin seem to be handling the stress of a crumbling marriage and 8 kids in very different ways. Over the weekend, Jon was spotted partaking in some retail therapy at the Riverside Square Mall in Hackensack, New Jersey. He reportedly spent more than $2,000 at the Barneys CO-OP while one of the women he was with ("family friends," he said) dropped $595 at Tumi on a bag. Jon definitely wasn't bargain shopping since he also checked out the mall's Louis Vuitton, Cole Haan and Godiva stores.
Meanwhile, Kate and the plus 8 had some fun in the sun on Bald Head Island, North Carolina. Kate showed off her famous post-babies tummy tuck in a bright orange bikini. Her bodyguard and rumored paramour, Steve Neild, was also on hand to spend some quality time with the family.

Kismet : Fresnel Travel: Fire Island's Lighthouse

We've been spending some time recently on a perfect summer island getaway: Fire Island, just off the south coast of Long Island. There's tons to do outside of hitting the beach, checking out the Sunken Forest and knocking a few back in the area bars with the local personalities as the sun sets on the bay.
One fun daytrip is to the Fire Island Lighthouse, perched off Kismet with amazing views of Long Island, the Atlantic Ocean, the South Bay and all of Fire Island's beaches. Built in 1857, the lighthouse was re-opened in 1987 as a museum and observatory by concerned locals looking to save this piece of American history. (It was decommissioned as an "aid to navigation" in the early '70s.) The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society (yep, FLIPS!) was also created to keep watch over this regal black and white landmark.
Two 1,000-watt bulbs now keep the lighthouse going, and the public can take guided tours of the lighthouse throughout the summer months.
Related Stories:
· Fire Island Lighthouse [Official Site]
· Hiking Fire Island's Sunken Forests [Jaunted]
· Landmarks coverage [Jaunted]
