Now that summer's winding down, our Killer Beaches Map seems but a distant memory. But unfortunately for surfer Todd Endris, we've got a new candidate today: Monterey's Marina State Beach.

Things got pretty gruesome, as Endris went from surfer to shark attack victim. Though he managed to punch the shark, a California State Parks spokesman said things started looking grim:

The shark took him down under the water. Witnesses saw a lot of thrashing and some blood coming up. Other witnesses saw the shark let him up before biting him one more time.

Endris eventually managed to fend the shark off, but he didn't get away unscathed: He underwent surgery for bites on his torso and thigh. A hospital employee summed it up nicely:

His vital signs are stable and he's conscious and uncomfortable, obviously.

Obviously.

And now the circle is complete. We have amassed the world's top killer beaches of 2007--told you how to get there, and even mapped them for you.

These beaches are all gorgeous and most definitely worth a visit, but if you spot a shark, get tugged by a strong current, or stung by a jelly at one of these beaches--you can't claim ignorance.

Just take precautions and you'll be fine, maybe.

The above photo is of Crane Beach in Barbados, another killer beach. Crane offers some of the best, most adventerous body surfing in the world. Furthermore, the locals like to jump off the surrounding cliffs, over jagged rocks, into the choppy Atlantic.

Recife Beach ::  Map
Brazil seems to have it all when it comes to beaches. Girls from Impanema, havaianas, caipirinhas--the whole coastline is designed for sandy relaxation. Throw in some futbolito, and you could have a killer day at the beach. Unless of course, that beach is Recife.

When your beach shows up on Discovery Channel's Shark Week, you know you're going to need some damage control PR. But all the spin in the world won't make up for the fact that since the `90s, Recife has become one of the world's most dangerous beaches. A combo of a shipping port and a (now shuttered) slaughterhouse inland and upriver created ideal conditions for bull sharks, which are now ensconced. Ideas for keeping sharks out are few and far between. Might we suggest staying in the shallows?

How to get there:
Guararapes International Airport is the local landing strip. Varig, TAP and Gol all serve Recife, though if you want a chance to see the beach, maybe flying in Brazil isn't the best idea.

Bondi Beach ::  Map
On the coast of suburban Sydney, Bondi Beach is sort of like Coney Island in New York, except nice. Beautiful blue water laps the sand and shark netting goes up to keep swimmers safe. You may even strike up an impromptu game of beer pong with some new, sunbathing friends. What's not to love?

You mean besides getting hammered while swimming in a crowded cove full of maniacal surfers? Well, there are those motorized dinghies that would be happy to run you down--check 'em out on the satellite view. Oh, and then there's that whole giant-hole-in-the-ozone-layer issue. But other than all that, Bondi's great!

How to get there:
Once you get to Sydney--maybe you'll fly there on an A380?--getting there is easy enough. You could of course drive there from downtown. There's also bus service, if you're into public transportation, like we are.

New Smyrna Beach :: Map
South of Jacksonville but north of Orlando and Cape Canaveral, New Smyrna Beach channels that old-time Florida vibe. (Like from before the days South Beach was over.) There's good reason to check it out, too. A 13-mile long stretch of sand guards the coast, and the surfing draws shredders from all over.

But could all those bobbing surf boards account for why Florida has suffered most of the past year's shark attacks? George Burgess, director of the International Shark Attack File, told the BBC:

"Within Florida, Volusia County and particularly New Smyrna Beach is the hot spot," Mr Burgess said in a statement. "This area on a square mile basis has more attacks than any place else in the world."

Maybe the best way to see NSB is by bike?

How to get there:
NSB is about an hour northeast of Orlando, and there's no doubt you'll be able to find a flight to MCO. Daytona Beach International Airport is about a half-hour from the beach--just cruise south on Highway 95 in that rental car.

Lambert Beach :: Map
The British Virgin Islands are the sailboat capital of the world, with plenty of snow bunnies helming yachts through the islands' calm waters. But the BVI are also rightly famous for their sugary sand beaches and easy snorkeling and diving. Unless of course we're talking about Lambert Beach.

Also known by its seductive alias--Elizabeth Beach--this half-moon-shaped strand lures in sun and surf lovers with its easily-accessible yet rarely crowded location. Once suckered in like bees to honey, swimmers find themselves facing a formidable undertow. Ocean currents are stronger than any swimmers we happen to know, so make sure you take a gander at the conditions before splashing in to cool off.

How to get there:
Once you get to Road Town and Tortola, the easiest way is just to hop a cab, which should take about 15 minutes. Driving yourself, head down Blackburn Highway until you reach the East End Police Station, then turn inland. Just remember: This is a British Virgin Island, so you'll be driving on the left. Papohaku Beach Park :: Map
Hawaii fans love Molokai for its sleepy atmosphere, but Papohaku Beach Park may be a little too sleepy. This stunningly beautiful beach is so isolated that you may even have the sand to yourself--not even lifeguards patrol the three-mile-long beach. Normally, we're all for deserted Pacific beaches, but at Papohaku you may find yourself in trouble.

We're not just talking about the winds that whip off the ocean, spraying sand into innocent beach-goers' eyes. The waves get ripping during a good part of the year, making for tough swimming. Depending on when you take that spring break, you may find yourself fighting some serious swell with no one around to play Lt. Mitch Buchannon for you. Make sure you've got swimming chops before diving in--Papohaku's deserted beauty can be deceiving.

How to get there:
On Molokai, from the airport, take the MaunaLoa Highway (460 West) to Kaluako'i Road. The beach is at Mile 14.9, Kaluako'i Road.

There is one parking lot with unmarked spaces. Public restrooms, indoor showers and changing rooms are also available.
