Here at Jaunted, we make sense of it all for you with the latest news, our own tried-and-true travel experiences, and of course— any free WiFi codes to keep you connected. If you follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or just regular old right here, then why not follow us in real life for a night?

On Thursday, December 3, we're talking with a few top travel friends at the 92Y Tribeca. The event, "Travel Gets Social: The New World of Travel Media," brings together Bowen Payson, Virgin America Manager of Online and Digital Marketing, NY Times Frugal Traveler Matt Gross, Adam Wallace, New Media Director for Roger Smith Hotel and others, moderated by the man who started it all: Mark G. Johnson, founder of Jaunted, HotelChatter and VegasChatter.

Jaunted's own Shira Lazar was featured on the The Early Show's travel segment this morning. Shira expertly walked Harry Smith through how social media travel is changing travel experiences -- from real time advice to new channels of customer service.

As with most stories involving travel deals these days, Twitter was the first thing Harry and Shira talked about. While Harry was a little skeptical about tweeting for real time travel info, Shira assured him that on a recent trip to Hawaii, local Twitterers came through with excellent advice for things to do and places to go. Same thing goes for tweeting about where to stay. Hotels are on Twitter and are reaching out to folks with hotel discounts.

Shira then ran through three Jaunted-approved travel websites--TripIt.com, Dopplr.com and CouchSurfing.com. Not quite sure we can see Harry Smith hitting up someone's couch in the future but at least he knows that's an option out there.

"I'm Going Someplace Nice Where No Mosquitoes At"

Long ago, while working at as a grunt at a magazine, I read a post on my favorite travel blog, asking for writers to help cover Amazing Race 10. A reality series and a year later, the boss asked me if I wanted to take over as editor. Now, nearly 17 months later, I'm finally going on a trip I won't have to write about as it happens.

I'm headed to Chile for a bit and then Easter Island, where the stone heads are large, the afternoons hot and the internet connections sketchy. I may not even check my email for days. It should be nice.

Eventually, I'll come back, and I'll probably keep blogging about travel, either here on Jaunted or over here. (Note to you commissioning editors: This is my email address.) Maybe I'll finally write that guidebook to Uruguay, the one that's desperately needed and that's undoubtedly bound for commercial failure. Maybe Jason Wilson will hire me to be his staff aguardiente aficionado at Table Matters. Or maybe I'll fix up an old sailboat and cruise Cayuga Lake this summer. I really haven't figured out what's next yet, so if you have a good idea, send me an email!

Welcome to our shiny new bicycle. We're super excited about the new look and feel of Jaunted, but the makeover doesn't mean we're going to stop bringing you news and opinion from the bleeding edge of travel and pop culture.

Here's how it all works: You'll find the three freshest stories front and center, played large like they deserve. Lower on the page, you can navigate by section, by region or country or by a Google domain search. Below the fold, you'll find more recent stories arrayed in a grid with an option to see more by clicking Next.

You'll also see two stories parked on the sidebar of the home page that are either super popular, racking up comments or are otherwise worthy of front door play. Clicking on a particular headline will get you that story, along with links to some related stories--as well as four more items you might enjoy. It's all designed to help you navigate the nearly 10,000 travel and pop culture posts on Jaunted.
