Rome: It May Look Modest, But This Could Be the Best Gelato in Rome

When we’re in Rome, we like to do what the Romans do and eat a lot of gelato. In fact, one of the great things about Italy is <s>the art</s> <s>the culture</s> that eating ice cream isn’t just a tourist thing.
One place we’d heard a lot about, but never visited, was Il Gelato di San Crispino, tucked away on a back street behind the Trevi Fountain. When we say tucked away, we mean tucked away; there’s only a tiny sign announcing its presence.
But it’d probably be overrun if it was any more exposed. Because the gelato of San Crispino is superlative. Only fresh ingredients are used—no preservatives, nothing frozen, only seasonal things—and boy does it show.

Napa: Organic Ice Cream Invades Napa Wine Country

It might not be low in calories or fat, but when you know it’s produced in a sustainable manner with local ingredients...that means it’s fine to have a triple-scoop, right?
The company’s ice cream can be found by the pint at locations across California, but their scoop shop in Napa’s Oxbow Public Market is where we got our fix. Each traditional flavor gets a new twist here with flavors like Madagascar Vanilla, Bittersweet Chocolate, and Milk & Cookies. We skipped over the traditional and went for The Chocolate Project. It was chocolate ice cream with flecks of dark chocolate, cacao nibs, chocolate cookies, and chocolate chips. We promise that we then had a salad for lunch.

Austin: Awesome Airport Ice Cream Is Available At Amy's In Austin

Sometimes we need a little more than a Frappuccino to satisfy our sweet tooth while waiting for a flight. With SXSW coming up in only a few weeks, we’ve got to nominate Amy’s Ice Cream as one of the best airport treats in the country. There’s plenty of locations in Austin as well, so you don’t have to wait until your flight out of Texas to make a stop for a little bit of ice cream.
Amy’s makes all their own ice cream, and with a butterfat content starting at 14 percent all flavors are creamy, delicious, and nutritious. The place always has seven standard options that are always available, and you’re welcome to add anything you’d like into flavors like sweet cream, white chocolate, Belgian chocolate, and Mexican vanilla. They mix the toppings right in front of you, and if you’ve got a skilled scooper, they might just do a trick or two while getting things ready. Think Tom Cruise in Cocktail, but with ice cream.

Three Times The Fun With Blue Bell's Ice Cream Tours

We’ve only got a few weeks left to gorge ourselves on hot dogs, hamburgers, and ice cream—then we’ll start dieting for the 2010 beach season, we promise. Empty cartons of their flavors can usually be found on coffee tables throughout the southeast.
The creamery opened its doors in 1907, and has been going strong ever since it named itself after the Texas bluebell wildflower. Expect more exciting facts like this when you take a tour of where the ice cream is made.
Scottsdale: Scottsdale Has An Ice Cream Parlor That's Worth The Flight

A couple weeks ago we found ourselves in the Valley of the Sun, looking to check out the best that the area has to offer. With temperatures during our stay already approaching 100 degrees, we were eager to find something tasty to help us cool down. Thankfully we learned about Sweet Republic Ice Cream in Scottsdale, but don't expect us to claim that we discovered it because it’s a huge hit on Yelp, with local foodies and Twitter; the place even just made Bon Appetit's list of ten best ice cream shops.
The ice cream parlor is located in a nothing-special strip mall about a 15-minute drive outside the hustle and bustle of Scottsdale’s shopping mecca. Everything here is made fresh daily and in small batches, so when it’s gone, it’s gone. We’re still a little miffed that we missed out on their Peanut Butter Chip. However, we did enjoy the delicious Brownie Swirl with a side of Cookie Monster. Both flavors were exactly what you’d expect and more, and had great flavor and texture—the dessert spoke for itself—and we quickly found out that this wasn’t your local scoop shop.

New York: NYC Gets a Big Gay Ice Cream Truck

The latest entry: the cheekily named Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, which will be rolling through the Village, Chelsea and Brooklyn soon.
Owner/ice cream connoisseur Doug Quint told Serious Eats about his decision to go with such an open name:
"Let's face it, ice cream trucks are kind of queer, and a middle-aged white man driving one is pretty suspect. That's not to say that I'm a rolling hotbed of perversion. Hardly the case. It's all in the name of silly."

All joking aside, the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck will be giving New York's mobile dessert scene a fancy-pants makeover with inventive flavors like Nutella, olive oil and sea salt, and bacon. Yes, that's bacon and ice cream together in one glorious food.
The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck takes off next week. Its approach to differentiating itself from other food trucks - and from other ice cream trucks - is exquisitely hipsterific.
