Pass the Mustard? Free In-flight Hot Dogs on Sun Country This Month!

This is one summer airline promotion that we can definitely support, as it combines a couple of our seasonal favorites—hot dogs and beer. Sun Country Airlines launched their “Hot Doggin’ it to the West Coast” promotion late last week and plans to continue promoting the fun through the end of July.

The airline is giving away free hot dogs, chips, and beer on certain flights between Minneapolis-St. Paul and certain spots on the left side of the United States. They’re doing this in honor of National Hot Dog Month, along with a little help from the local minor league baseball team—the St. Paul Saints. Flight attendants will even give away free tickets to the ballpark to a few lucky fliers on each and every one of the special hot dog flights.

July offers a major holiday, and we're not talking about the Fourth. It's National Hot Dog Month, which means it's pretty much required that you have to load up on encased meats. Chicago serves up its own unique take, putting the frank in a poppyseed bun and piling it with mustard, chopped onion, green relish, tomatoes, a pickle spear, sport peppers and celery salt. Whatever you do, don't ask for ketchup—it's a surefire giveaway that you're a tourist.

Los Angeles: Hot Diggity Dog: Pink's Opens a Hot Dog Shack at LAX Today

If you happen to be in LAX today, rush over to to the Tom Bradley International Terminal. At 3 p.m., Hollywood hot dog hawker Pink's will open a location in the airport.

It will actually be the first Pink's outpost in an airport. And like the original Pink's at Melrose and N. La Brea Avenues in LA proper, there'll likely be a long line for those legendary chili dogs. So don't expect to quickly grab some delicious encased meat before your flight.

Huntington: West Virginia Salutes Buns and Dogs with a Hot Dog Food Fest

Summer is like halfway over, so if you haven’t had at least a dozen hot dogs by now you need to get moving. West Virginia wants to help you out with your personal hot dog quotient, as they are putting the final touches on the preparation for the 6th Annual West Virginia Hot Dog Festival on Saturday, July 31.

The state has its own regional hot dog delicacies, and there are plenty of roadside stands and shacks that have been serving up tube meat delicacies for decades. Places like Stewarts Original Hot Dogs, Frostop Drive-In, and Hillbilly Hot Dogs are just three of many that will be making an appearance in just a couple weeks. Festival organizers are bringing at least a dozen vendors from the area to Pullman Square in Huntington, so that you can conveniently overindulge in one location.

Boston: Boston Invites You Along on Their Questionably Named 'Hot Dog Safari'

There’s nothing that welcomes the summer more than that first hot dog off the grill, so we’re planning to really welcome this summer season with the Phantom Gourmet Hot Dog Safari. This year, sausage takes center stage on May 23 at Suffolk Downs in East Boston. The food festival only happens that afternoon from 12-5pm, but it's such to pack a punch in little time.

Tickets are $15 in advance, and you can consider your admission an all-you-can-eat pass. Kayem Brats, Fenway Franks, and Sir Franks-A-Lot are just some of the vendors that will be passing out dogs to the masses. However, water and soda are going to set you back $1 once you get thirsty, which seems more than fair. There will even be ice cream for dessert if you somehow haven’t overdone it. We’ve heard that the place can get pretty crowded, so remember to be patient so everyone gets their share of mustard, relish, and onions.

Los Angeles: Chili Dogs And Long Flights: LAX To Get Pink's Hot Dogs

The need for in-flight Tums just increased dramatically. Although they are already building a new outpost in Vegas, the famous Pink’s Hot Dogs is now coming to LAX airport. Let’s just hope the long lines don’t prevent travelers from boarding their planes on time.

This wiener palace will be situated within the airport’s Tom Bradley International Terminal, so you’ll need to leave the country to get one of their hot dogs for your carry-on snack. The place should open by the end of the year, and they’ll be offering up 11 of their 21 famous creations. We’re pretty sure that their chili dogs will be one of the different varieties—in-flight curious smells warning!

For now you can find them at their original location at the corner of Melrose and La Brea Avenues in Los Angeles. Just look for the line that snakes around the building, and be prepared to wait for a bit.

New York: Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest Throws Pachyderms in the Mix This Year

BBQs and fireworks are great, but for us the most thrilling part of the Fourth of July has always been the gluttonous spectacle that is the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island.

If you’ve ever watched grown men down 60 hot dogs in 10 minutes at this annual New York freakshow and thought “I wish this could be weirder,” this year you’re in luck. The 2009 contest will be preceded on July 3 by a hot dog bun eating contest, in which three professional eaters will take on three semi-professional eaters: elephants from the Ringling Brothers Circus.
