Greyhound Express Celebrates Its Birthday by Heading Down to Florida

Greyhound used to do their thing without too much fuss or competition, but once new options like BoltBus and MegaBus arrived on the scene things certainly started to change. About a year ago the old standby introduced their “Greyhound Express” service, and things must have gone pretty well—they’re now expanding things into the Sunshine State.
Utilizing their hub in Atlanta, the $1 fares and free on board WiFi is heading down to Florida. Cities like Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale will all be getting the Greyhound Express treatment, plus there’s even a new option heading to and from Fayetteville, North Carolina. The power outlets and extra legroom start rolling as early as this week, and the tickets are already available for purchase. Sure it’s not as quick as flying, but it’s certainly less of a hassle and the savings might just boost your Spring Break budget.

It's Okay to Take a Greyhound Bus, Thanks to These Three Major Improvements

Good news! Greyhound has gotten with the program. The bus line famous for long, unpleasant road journeys is cleaning up their act with new buses, express routes and cheap fares that match their competitors. Let's break it down:
· New Buses.
We had a happy accident recently of riding a new Greyhound bus down to Atlantic City, and they are nice, perhaps more so than the pretty alright buses of Megabus. It doesn't cost any extra to ride on one of these and currently they're only available on prime routes, but they offer major perks like free WiFi, outlets at each seat, more legroom and more fuel-efficient engines. Find out what routes they ride here.

Take that, regional jets!
Not only are there new bus lines springing up every so often, like Megabus, Boltbus, TripperBus, and NeOn Bus, but even Greyhound is getting a makeover with the WiFi and outlet additions on select routes.
Atlantic City: Inside One Of Greyhound's New WiFi-Equipped Buses

This last weekend, while randomly hopping down to Atlantic City for the day, we did not expect to be treated to the plushness of one of Greyhound's new buses. We say "plushness" meaning it's pretty nice for a bus, you know.
According to the Greyhound website, the premium coaches—outfitted with free WiFi, outlets, more leg room, and fresh interiors—are only found on their NYC to Montreal, Toronto and Boston and DC to New York, Boston and Montreal routes. We got lucky and spent the 4-hour-long, one-way trip (thanks, Saturday traffic) charging our phones and napping. At the same time, Greyhound started to train women to drive buses when more than 40 percent of the U.S. workforce was called to military service. And, in 1961, Greyhound carried a group of civil rights leaders known as the 'Freedom Riders' into the Deep South to protest state-sponsored segregation in interstate transportation facilities. Later that year, the Interstate Commerce Commission outlawed segregation in all interstate transportation facilities.

It's difficult to think of a time when women didn't drive buses; boarding a bus these days just wouldn't be the same without a stern lady driver reprimanding us for not printing the right confirmation email. Here's to another 95 years, Greyhound.
Related Stories:
· 95 Years and Millions of Miles [Greyhound Press Release]
· Bus Travel Coverage [Jaunted]
