World's Worst Tourists: Do Germans Really Steal Tips?

Despite an Expedia survey suggesting Germans were the world's most popular tourists, anecdotal evidence seems to suggest the opposite. In a BBC Talking Point forum, German tourists were frequently mentioned. Of course, there are a whole stack of German tourists out there, increasing the probability that they'll annoy somebody, somewhere.

Excuses aside, apparently it is not only their habit of putting their towels on pool chairs before dawn that's considered very annoying: a traveler who'd backpacked around Asia said they'd seen a lot of German tourists "treating the Asians quite rudely". A tourist worker from Bali described German tourists as the most arrogant on the planet, and someone who'd worked in a London restaurant near a major tourist attraction said "the rudest tourists tended to be either very young or very old Germans".
One commenter even said they had "caught a German stealing from the tip plate on the bar more than once in Tunisia". We've heard Germans are supposed to be stingy, but stealing from the tip plate?!
Related Stories:
· World's Worst Tourists Coverage [Jaunted]
· Germans Tourists Beat Heatwave With Nudity [Jaunted]
· Bus Driver Burns Pool Towels [Jaunted]

Novi Sad: German Tourists Beats Heatwave With Nudity

German tourists have a bit of a reputation for doing what they please while traveling--remember the Germans who hogged the poolside seats so much that someone made a bonfire with their towels?

This week in Serbia, a German tourist made the headlines again. With a summer heatwave sending temperatures well over the century, a German guy and his two Austrian pals decided to beat the heat by cycling naked.

Partway along their Danube River route, the police nabbed them and issued fines of 10,000 dinars ($175) each. Sure, the fine would've hurt, but what about the risks to their private parts while riding nude: sunburn, getting caught in the seat, not to mention plain humiliation? But that's German (and Austrian) tourists for you.

Related Stories:
· Bus Driver Burns Pool Towels [Jaunted]
· Tourists Fined For Cycling Nude in Heat Wave [MSNBC]
· Travel Stories in Serbia [Jaunted]

[Photo: the boy on the bike]

Bus Driver Burns Pool Towels

Ever stayed at a resort, enjoyed your breakfast, then wandered down for a day poolside only to discover that a bunch of other tourists have "saved" all the good spots by creeping down at dawn and leaving their towels there?

We have, and we hate it. But not as much as one British guy who recently got his revenge. At Viana Marina, a resort on the Italian Riviera, the bus driver for a group of Welsh tourists decided that his poor customers had complained one too many times about the early morning towel layers. He collected up every towel from every sunbed--which he claims, fitting the stereotype, were all left there by German tourists--and burnt them in a beach bonfire. Perhaps it's a good thing the Germans are creating their own exclusive Italian resort where such behavior will probably be greeted with smiles rather than smoke.

Related Stories:
· Brit Burnt German Towels [Ananova]
· Germans Buy Village in Tuscany [Jaunted]
· Hotels in Italy [HotelChatter]
