Okay everyone, ready for some serious South America travel news? So LAN—which is really a group of airlines including LAN Chile, LAN Ecuador, LAN Argentina, LAN Express and LAN Colombia—made all kinds of changes, for the better, to their routes and in-flight service today, February 1.

· First off, LAN Colombia (which only really started as an airline in December 2012 after LAN took over Colombian airline AIRES) is now flying direct from Miami to Bogota. The inaugural hit the skies earlier today, complete with a visit from Juan Valdez, who served the passengers their in-flight coffees. Fares for this new route, which runs four times weekly on Airbus A320s, are $400 roundtrip, including taxes & fees, if booked by February 6. Our first glimpse of the A380 at JFK, hiding behind the Aer Lingus jet

We type this from the bowels of the Oasis Lounge at New York-JFK Terminal 4, where the WiFi is achingly slow and our fingers jitter from a combo of excitement and the cold air leaking in.

Tonight marks the first scheduled departure of a Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 from JFK, and we'll be onboard...on flight SQ 25 all the way from New York to Frankfurt International, and on to Singapore-Changi International.

We admit there have been times that we may have put noise cancelling headphones just to give the illusion of listening to music, warding off fellow passengers' incessant blabbing. There also have been times we've noticed someone that looks interesting—ahem attractive ahem—and wished we could swap seats to get a little closer.

The latter is how KLM prefers to fly, and they'll soon offer passengers the ability to pick their seatmate based on Facebook or Linkedin profiles. By next year, the airline will not only offer a window or aisle preference, but allow customers to view the profile of other passengers, then choose whether or not to sit next to them.

The first red flag we see is the obvious privacy of personal details. Passengers must opt-in to have their social media profile available for other travelers to see. Which means, not everyone will be taking part in this singles bar in the sky. Sigh of relief! Hopefully you’re safely back in town after a weekend of holiday travels, and if you’re lucky you might have even been served a bag of peanuts by one of the best flight attendants around. Apparently she’s been hard at work—and extra friendly—aboard plenty of Southwest Airlines flights, and she’s so nice she even got the airline a customer for life.

On a recent flight, a passenger and his girlfriend were quite impressed with a flight attendant by the name of Holly. It just happened to be a WiFi-enabled flight, so the traveler logged on to Facebook to let Southwest know what a great flight it was. On a whim he suggested that someone meet them at the gate to give Holly a raise, a promotion, or even a burrito from Chipotle. Ever since someone stupidly convinced Orbitz that they needed to invest in a Facebook application two years ago—the premise being that people would want to share their travel plans with all of their high school and college and work and random stalkerish Facebook friends—we've kind of given up on complaining about meaningless social media projects. Organizations will build Facebook pages, even if there's no real need for those types of organization to have Facebook pages, because that's what organizations do now.

Fair enough.

So let's quickly glide past how we don't really understand why LAX needs a new Facebook page, which is something they just launched. Virgin Atlantic has managed to align itself with anything sleek, sexy, and, well, just plain awesome on the travel front, with this cool cache now extending to international cultural happenings. Film festivals—what with their covetable goodie bags, after parties, and celebrity pull—certainly fall into the "Ever-So-Hip" category, which is likely why VA has aligned itself with the forthcoming Telluride Film Festival, set to take place from September 2-5, 2011.
