An interesting TSA-related incident happened at LAX last month that underscores the tricky balance between security and liberty. A comic artist named Mark Sable was detained for additional screening by TSA agents who were alarmed at the content of a script they found in his bag, the latest in a comic (or graphic novel, if you like) series called Unthinkable. As SFScope points out, the script follows members of a shadowy government group that dreams up "unthinkable" 9/11-type catastrophes that begin coming true. Up in Scandinavia, SAS Airlines have been known to pull some quirky marketing maneuvers in the past, and their latest idea for educating travelers all about using the SAS "mobile travel solutions" is to create a romantic comic strip.

Enter Love At First Flight, the SAS creation which follows the blossoming romance between James and Sophie, who meet, of course, on an SAS flight between London and Stockholm. The magazine-style comic looks nice, but includes spectacularly unromantic lines like, "It's OK, take your time, SAS have just alerted me that the departure time's changed".

Cheesy it may be, yet this comic is very readable and still tells you all about checking in via cell phone, looking up flight changes online and using frequent flyer points in the digital age. Anyone who has a fond memory of devouring the journeys in Tintin books is going to be a bit jealous of a British guy who's about to recreate the trip Tintin took in Land of Black Gold.

Barrimore England-Davis, major Tintin fan, has done up a vintage Jeep and will be driving through Spain and then across the desert in Morocco--along with a friend, and a dog named Snowy after Tintin's faithful hound.

The journey's scheduled to take six weeks and we're wondering if England-Davis plans to then follow a few more of Tintin's journeys. We're especially curious about what's going to happen when he sets out on Tintin's trips to fictional lands like Sao Rico, Syldavia or Borduria.

Geeky Philly: What to do once you've seen the lightsabers and droids at the Star Wars show.

It wouldn't be a geeky trip without at least a look inside a comic book shop. Fortunately, Philly has two stores worth a visit, each with its own flavor.

Brave New Worlds in Old City keeps its focus on new releases as well as graphic novels and other alternative works. The shop also has tons of toys and figurines from tiny up to a full-size Darth Vader statue/model. While the amount of stuff seems overwhelming at first, the selection is actually well edited compared to some comic stores we've been to. It all adds up to an easily browsable experience. 45 N. 2nd St.

Fat Jack's Comic Crypt on the other hand seems to have just about every comic ever published. But fear not! The store's not a disorganized den. All the back issues are neatly tucked away in crates toward the back. Newer stuff is up front, along with trading cards and other collectibles.
