ME: Beach House Spectacular: Maine-ly Lobster

Lobster Roll round-up! Before we go any further, we'd like to state for the record that we like our lobster roll cold and with mayo. Want to have it with warm butter? That's for when you do the work yourself and eat the lobster with your hands. Feel free to comment to the contrary, but it will be very difficult to disabuse us of this notion.

Nonetheless, the New York Times Escapes section has seen it fit to go up the coast of Maine in search of lobster roll goodness. In addition to the never-ending debate over how it should be served, they manage to find some interesting spots.

One of note was Red's Eats, in Wiscasset. Open since 1938, they serve the roll with mayo and warm butter on the side, allowing diners to pick their poison. It sounds tasty, even if they are sidestepping the issue. Another tasty locale is Shaw's, in New Harbor, near Darmiscotta. It's far larger than the average clam shack, with a huge (buggy) outdoor deck, but it's still one of the prettiest places to sample a lobster roll in Maine. And they serve it with mayo--the right way.

Related Stories:
· On a Roll, for Lobster [NYT]
· Maine Beach Houses [Jaunted]

Rosecrans Baldwin over at the Morning News has an excellent essay today on how to tell if you're on vacation in Maine. Thanks to the ever-expanding technological envelope (and the increasing availability of good wine) it can be hard to know when you're finally in Vacationland proper. There are, however, ways to tell. Here's one:
Crystal Meth is easier to obtain in rural Maine than it is back home. So are crystals, and posters of wolves kissing dolphins in outer space.
Forget anything with a lobster on it; the next time we hit Bar Harbor, we want wolves kissing dolphins. Can we get that airbrushed on the side of a van?

Related Stories:
· The Maine Attraction [TMN]

ME: Beach Spectacular: Maine in the Rain

Rain. Yup, that is the Maine Beach Spectacular weekend report for the June 9 - 11 weekend.
However, the despite the fact that Maine resembled the Pacific Northwest this weekend, we took solace in two things--eating and drinking.
Eating Report:
Amatos
Italian sandwiches are huge in Maine. You may know them as grinders or subs, but inside the ME state lines you best be referrring to these ham and cheese sandwiches as Italians.
Amatos serves the second best Italian in Maine, later this summer we will reveal the best Italian in Maine (hint: you will have to drive to Freeport).
What is a Maine Italian? Here is a Wikipedia style definition, courtesy of Maine Today:

A sandwich featuring assorted vegetables, olive oil, salt, pepper and meat. The Maine Italian with ham is the "new style." The original, served to workers on the city's docks in the early 1900s by Giovanni Amato, featured Genoa salami, not ham.

Forget the Genoa salami, order your Italian with ham, if you want to be traditional, Humpty Dumpty chips, and a soda and you will fit right in.
Lobster
We had our first Bayley's Lobster of the season--of the hard shell variety--and we have to say the Lobster was a bit dry. We don't use butter on our Lobster. Soaking your lobster meat in butter, according to many old school Mainers, ruins the taste.
Old Port Report
Our Saturday night visit to the Old Port consisted of a visit to Gritty's and Bull Feeney's, two traditional pubs. Despite the rain Fore Street was packed with folks escaping the smoke free bars to have a smoke. The biggest Old Port shocker? Everyone is underage. The place is filled with nineteen year old girls dressed to the nines.
