What do Hans Christian Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard, and Nobel Prize winning scientist Niels Bohr have in common? They've all taken up a final resting place at Copenhagen's Assistens Cemetery, a lush and serene plot of land in the city's Nørrebro neighborhood. Thanatourists among you will, without a doubt, appreciate the cultural significancy of a visit to Assistens, but even those who lack interest in the great beyond will find solace in its green and leafy surroundings. ]]>
The cryptic, yet beautiful grounds of Los Angeles' Hollywood Forever Cemetery are known for hosting summertime screenings of classic movies like Cool Hand Luke, and occasional special events like last week's sunrise concert with Bon Iver. But don't let its role as an entertainment venue dwarf the fact that it's a resting ground for many Hollywood luminaries, with floral-strewn monuments to prove it. Take a moment to slow down as your stroll through Hollywood Forever, and might find yourself overcome by its sprawling history.
If you're not adverse to spending your afternoon in the company of massive headstones, then you can learn a little more about the site with a walking tour hosted by guide Karie Bible. Bible claims she could give a six-hour tour of the grounds and still not cover everything there is to know about Hollywood Forever, so you'll get your fill of informational tidbits, and then some. We promise the actual tour won't last that long, and it will cost you a pittance of $12. ]]>
When you're a town of just 1200 people, kind of in the middle of nowhere and not on the route to anywhere, really, you have to dig deep to find a way to attract tourists. Or, you have to dig holes for dogs.
And, we're a bit sorry to say, not the same holes that dogs love to dig for themselves. At Corrigin's Dog Cemetery in south-west Australia, over 80 dogs who've given up the mortal life are buried. Each has its own headstone, many with touching messages about their loyalty and friendliness. A few Snoopys and more than enough Busters lie in the cemetery, and the care that still goes on around the gravesites makes it worth a visit for pure amazement value.
The good news? You can bury your own dog here if you want, and it doesn't even cost a cent.
