Los Angeles: What's Opera Doc?

The city of Los Angeles represents the ultimate blending of high culture and low culture, so there's no better place to take in some Looney Tunes accompanied by classical music.

At the Hollywood Bowl's staging of "Bugs Bunny on Broadway," the LA Philharmonic gives a live performance alongside Bugs Bunny classics like "What's Opera Doc?" and "The Rabbit of Seville."

If you're in search of a mellow, post-Independence Day activity, the final show is this Saturday, July 5. Tickets range from $10 to $149. Check out a preview after the jump.

Washington : Fall Culture Travel :: Cartoons At The Library

You don't have to stay at home just because the leaves are changing. Follow along on our Fall Culture Map to discover what's happening this autumn.

Since a chill officially filled the air and the leaves dropped, it's time to toss the apple picking and hikes aside and barricade yourself indoors. Visit a museum, or the Library of Congress, for example. Sound boring? Wrong. The LoC's Prints & Photographs Division in Washington, D.C. houses an enormous cartoon collection.

The Art Wood Collection of Caricature and Cartoon, assembled by J. Arthur Wood, Jr., contains an estimated 36,000 works by more than 2,800 artists and includes political cartoons, caricatures, comic strips, humor cartoons, illustrations and animation slides. Collections range from hard-hitting commentary on corruption, war and public figures to family strips such as "Gasoline Alley" and "For Better or For Worse."

The collection is sometimes trotted out for public exhibitions, but you can always stop by to see it with a little advanced planning. Just figure out what you'd like to see--comics, political cartoons, whatever--then get in touch with the librarians via email. They're happy to help you dig up to old strips you want to see.

Sexy Flash Flight Attendants

Hot flight attendants never go out of style, but a couple of Eastern European airlines are taking temptation to the next and creepiest level. Then again, we've never flown LOT or Adria, so perhaps a hot cartoon is the best they've got. We're just assuming they play the game well given the way our country imports their kind into the fashion industry. Anyone care to pipe in with a rating for their staff?

Check out their websites and you'll notice some special ladies enticing you towards their new offers: low fares to Ljubljana for Adria, and a new business class for LOT. We like Adria's busty attendant because she winks at us and we're suckers for that personal touch. LOT's bait is a bit weirder: she's a leggy bird (literally) at the beck and call of her business class passengers. Where will these flash ladies turn up next? We sense a trend and will let you know if we spot them elsewhere across the web.

Homer in the Sky: Oops!

Poor Homer Simpson is oblivious to the differences between coach and first class. There was a simpler time when we used to be just as confused, too. Now we understand how those things work. The above incident would never have happened on JetBlue, you know...just saying.

Even if you're not a huge Simpsons fan, their travel episodes are great. See also "Bart Vs. Australia," a classic in which Bart causes terror Down Under. That one also contains a memorable moment in which Homer discovers the country of "U-R-GAY" in South America.

Sharjah: South Park Goes to the Middle East

For the section of our reading demographic that overlaps with South Park viewers, you may have heard about the censorship to-do surrounding Wednesday's episode. The episode, which contained a show within a show (just like Hamlet!) controversy about Family Guy showing an image of Muhammad that was censored by FOX, was censored itself by Comedy Central.

Issues of free speech aside, it's interesting that while Comedy Central is worried that South Park may spark unrest in the Arab and Muslim world, the Arab world is pretty positively disposed towards South Park. So positively disposed, in fact, that recent startup carrier Air Arabia, based out of Sharjah Airport in the United Arab Emirates, has a picture of a swarthy looking Kyle (pictured, though it could be Stan) from the show on the front page of their web site. Actually, there are several versions, including Kyle wearing a fez and a dishdasha.

Keep your eyes peeled to see if Comedy Central tries to censor those images, too. There is no religion holier than copyright law, after all.
