Tokyo: Inside Tokyo-Haneda's New International Terminal, Part 2: The Huge Hello Kitty Store

It just so happens that Tokyo's Haneda Airport—a smaller, far more convenient airport than Narita that previously focused on domestic flights—opened their funky new International Terminal the same week we're in Tokyo. Thanks to ANA getting us security clearance, we'll be bringing you a 5-part series for complete inside looks at everything from the Monorail to the ultra-exclusive airside lounges.
Today, Part 2: Inside the huge Hello Kitty store.
You've seen the area of Tokyo-Haneda Airport's new international terminal that most appeals to visitors and flyers&#151:Edo Marketplace as we said yesterday—but today, we're having some Friday fun by focusing on a far more targeted area of the airport: the Hello Kitty store.
The paradise of pink and everything kawaii includes products of a shockingly wide range; anyone for Helly Kitty dried cuttlefish or maybe cell phone bling bling? This is where it's at, and plus the shop is pre-security, so expect it to be consistently packed.
Now, let's take a walk though the store...

Even Cartoons Can't Stand Airline Baggage Fees

Aren't checked baggage fees just one of the most annoying things in modern air travel? Aside from ending up next to someone who loudly gabs on their phone until the final seconds before takeoff, encountering a bag fee is like our worst nightmare. We hate surprises like that.
And it looks like we're not alone. Even the famously cranky Cathy comic gives her two cents on the issue with the above stripe. The point is, there's all these great fashions to take on your vacation, but if you're too frugal to pay a $25 (or higher) bag fee or you're just against the charge altogether, then you may be stuck picking between style and comfort for the few things that fit in your carry-on. Let's hope Cathy doesn't discover Spirit Airlines' carry-on baggage fee too.

Washington : Fall Culture Travel :: Cartoons At The Library

You don't have to stay at home just because the leaves are changing. Follow along on our Fall Culture Map to discover what's happening this autumn.
Since a chill officially filled the air and the leaves dropped, it's time to toss the apple picking and hikes aside and barricade yourself indoors. Visit a museum, or the Library of Congress, for example. Sound boring? Wrong. The LoC's Prints & Photographs Division in Washington, D.C. houses an enormous cartoon collection.
The Art Wood Collection of Caricature and Cartoon, assembled by J. Arthur Wood, Jr., contains an estimated 36,000 works by more than 2,800 artists and includes political cartoons, caricatures, comic strips, humor cartoons, illustrations and animation slides. Collections range from hard-hitting commentary on corruption, war and public figures to family strips such as "Gasoline Alley" and "For Better or For Worse."
The collection is sometimes trotted out for public exhibitions, but you can always stop by to see it with a little advanced planning. Just figure out what you'd like to see--comics, political cartoons, whatever--then get in touch with the librarians via email. They're happy to help you dig up to old strips you want to see.
Related Stories:
· Cartoon Cornucopia [Official Site]
· Fall Culture Travel coverage [Jaunted]
· Fall Culture Travel Map [Jaunted]
