For celebrities, summer vacation means sand and surf and it looks like this year their beaches of choice are in Hawaii.
Just yesterday, Julia Roberts was spotted laying under a makeshift tent built out of branches and sarongs on the beach in Kauai, along with her husband, Danny Moder and their three kids, twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, and son Henry. The famous family went swimming, played on bodyboards and ate sandy sandwiches for lunch, just like the rest of us. ]]>
Ben Stiller's been Tweeting the latest on the "Snowpocalypse" from his neighborhood in NYC. This morning he tweeted a photo of the "light dusting" on Park Ave and then he "Saw someone attempting to snowboard off a rock in Riverside Park this morning. I don't think it was the Flying Tomato." It sounds like he's having a full morning despite the snow.
Luckily for Ben he flew back into NYC Wednesday, narrowly missing the storm that is wreaking havoc on the skies today. He just got back from a whirlwind trip that started with the premiere of his upcoming flick, Greenberg, in Berlin on Valentine's Day and ended Tuesday in Mozambique. ]]>
"Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian", the follow up to Ben Stiller's 2006 hit "Night at the Museum", opens across the country today. The movie, set in Washington D.C., was mostly filmed on a Vancouver sound stage. That isn't stopping D.C. from doing its best to capitalize on the potential family tourism dollars the movie can bring in though. We've been sick this week and thus our attention span, when not doing shots of Nyquil, has dwindled down to naught--just like the budgets of a million would-be filmmakers trying to tell the quintessential New York City Story.
But don't despair! All you really need is one great location shot to put your viewers in NYC, as the following big-budget movies make perfectly clear:
"Vanilla Sky" (2001) -- Yeah, the original Spanish movie is better, but we'll never forget that memorable non-spoilery shot of Tom Cruise standing in a deserted Times Square. This isn't a special effect either; Cameron Crowe was allowed to block off the entire square for three hours, his one chance to get this shot.
"Coyote Ugly" (2000) -- This below-average sleepover movie has more than a jigger of truth to it: The adventures of naive bartendrix Piper Perabo at the dive were loosely based on a story in GQ magazine by author Elizabeth Gilbert--who's now famous for Eat, Pray, Love.
"Night at the Museum" (2006) -- You might not spot Dick Van Dyke or Ricky Gervais there, but even the bumblings of Ben Stiller can't take away from the grandeur of the American Museum of Natural History, as seen (in a sadder context) in 2005's "The Squid and the Whale." The rest of the film may as well have been shot in Rupert Murdoch's basement.
