Croatian Summer: Take Care of Your Testicles

Pay attention: We have to add a warning to our recommendation that Croatia's a good summer vacation destination. One Croatian fellow this week had a pretty tricky time of it on the nudist beach Valalta, near Rovinj.

You guys can probably imagine the situation. Take a dip in the chilly sea (and remember it's a nudist beach). Sit down on your deck chair to soak up some rays. The physics here is relatively simple: this guy's family jewels had shriveled up in the cold water, hung down through one of the gaps in his wooden beach chair, then slowly returned to their normal size, until ... until he wanted to stand up.

His testicles had shrunk while in the cool sea and slipped through the wooden slats when he sat back down on his wooden deckchair.

But as he lay in the sun they expanded back to normal size and got stuck between the slats.

He was eventually freed after he called beach maintenance services on his mobile phone and they sent a member of staff to cut the deck chair in half.
Ouch.

Related stories:
Deckchair Trapped Testicles [Ananova]
Sweet Summer Rentals [Jaunted]

Karwar: India Update: Devbagh Island

The tiny town of Karwar, on the coast of the Arabian Sea and a two-hour drive from the Goa airport, isn't much of a tourist draw in itself, but from Karwar the island of Devbagh is just a five-minute boat ride away. The Devbagh Beach Resort there is kind of an anti-Goa -- there are no nightclubs or flashiness, and the guests are middle-class Indian families rather than backpackers from Nottingham or Tel Aviv.

What you have here in abundance are amazingly beautiful surroundings. You're likely to have the clean, extremely long beach almost to yourself -- there might be some locals from the fishing village nearby dragging their nets through the surf. The resort itself is wooded with casuarina trees, a kind of evergreen, keeping things shady and relatively cool.

Staying here isn't roughing it. The cabins and huts aren't fancy, but they are wired for electricity and therefore have the ceiling fans that become essential very early in the year. The meals, included in rates, were elaborate and good, with prawn curry and other seafood served at just about every meal. There's also a nightly bonfire on the beach, with fish grilled right there in front of you. If you want a break from Goa craziness, then Devbagh might be just the place to take it.

Well, if some researchers are right, you might just have an addiction to non-pasty flesh!
NY: Straights on Fire (Island)

After several recent articles about Fire Island's laid-back Cherry Grove and its increasing popularity with straights, Blaise (at Bazima.com) is starting to worry about it losing that special homo quality. An honorable gay herself ("I was conceived at a Diana Ross concert"), she has a little advice for those thinking about heading Grove-ward. For instance:

Be comfortable with public nudity. If you think you're comfortable with public nudity ask yourself this: Am I okay with seeing old, fat naked men building sand castles on the beach or topless lesbians with tits down to their knees?

Related Stories:

· Defend The Grove [Bazima.com]
· Cherry Grove [Blaise's Flickr photoset]
· Tides of change at Cherry Grove [Newsday]
· Gays flocked to community after 1938 storm [Newsday]
· Weekender | Cherry Grove, N.Y [NYT]
