CA: A Boeing 727 Will Soon Be Buried in the Mojave Desert, in the Name of Art

The Mojave Desert is literally a hot spot for aviation. There's Virgin Galactic based out there, the Paul Allen-funded "biggest airplane" project, and soon, something odd enough to attract even more attention. Christoph Buchel—he’s a Swiss artist—is getting ready to install his latest masterpiece into the middle of the sand in the Mojave Desert. Best of all, the thing he’s planning to bury in the sand is a whole freaking airplane.
Some will argue the benefits of this art installation, but as aviation geeks we’re obviously a little intrigued about seeing the project from beginning to end. The plan is to submerge a Boeing 727 into the desert as part of an exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Those wanting to take a peek will have to take a ride out from Los Angeles, but it sounds like the road trip might be worth it.

Boston: $114 Million and a Spit Shine Revamps Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

We know, we know; it's freaking cold in Boston right now and it's not exactly your winter dream destination. Still, Boston has something up its sleeve during these slow months—the opening of a new wing to the Isabella Stewart Garnder Museum. The $114 million dollar addition designed by architect Renzo Piano houses 5,000 priceless objects, plus an interior garden courtyard and a cafe.
Potential art thieves will think twice about hitting here now, as a new entrance means beefed-up security. Lest we forget the curious case of the missing paintings, as Bloomberg refresh our memory: "in one of America’s most brazen art thefts, more than a dozen works were stolen from the Gardner in 1990, including three Rembrandts and a Vermeer. None have been recovered."
Of course, that's not what the Gardner Museum wants you to focus on as you tour the new wing's tapestry room, 300-seat recital hall and, of course, the galleries of paintings by the masters. If you'd like to see it all for yourself, tickets run $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $5 for students. If you're under 18, you're for free, and the same goes for anyone named "Isabella."

Miami: What Not To Do At Art Basel Miami Beach: The Top Five Newbie Mistakes

Art Basel is now underway in Miami; technically the center of it all is South Beach, but there are fairs and exhibitions and installations and events all over the city. We'd like to tell you not to drive because traffic is a bee-yotch but then, taking a cab is not the best idea if you want to save some money to buy art.
With no good public transport options to get around, other than slow and unreliable buses, Miami's best bet for transport during this time may be a scooter or our old friend, DecoBike.
As for what not to do, we've got some tips in that department, too. Right this way...
5. DON'T forget the satellite fairs: It's not all about the official show—Art Basel Miami Beach, at the Miami Beach Convention Center—although the art fair is worth browsing even if you don't have deep pockets. (Keep your eyes peeled for celebs. Names as varied as Will Ferrell and Sylvester Stallone have been spotted.) But definitely make time for some of the more manageable, potentially more interesting, side fairs that have cropped up in the shadows of ABMB. The best include NADA, Scope and Design Miami/.

Denver: Modern Art Travel: Six Miles of Fabric, a Rocky Mountain River and Christo

Mark your calendars for a trip to Colorado in 2014 as plans for the next large, public art project by Christo finally moves forward.
This is a huge deal, not just for fans of Christo and modern art in general, but for Denver, Coloradans, tourists to the state and anyone who enjoys experiencing the great outdoors. Christo, in case you've forgotten the massive "Gates" installation in Central Park, is an artist who typically wraps or covers areas or landmarks in fabric. A personal favorite is his wrapped Reichstag. The project in CO, however—Over the River—would stretch some 6 miles of translucent silver fabric over the Arkansas River.
Yesterday "Over the River" received the OK from federal officials and now the plan is off to state and local authorities before work may begin.
