Art Basel is now underway in Miami; technically the center of it all is South Beach, but there are fairs and exhibitions and installations and events all over the city. We'd like to tell you not to drive because traffic is a bee-yotch but then, taking a cab is not the best idea if you want to save some money to buy art.

With no good public transport options to get around, other than slow and unreliable buses, Miami's best bet for transport during this time may be a scooter or our old friend, DecoBike.

As for what not to do, we've got some tips in that department, too. Right this way...

DON'T forget the satellite fairs: It's not all about the official show—Art Basel Miami Beach, at the Miami Beach Convention Center—although the art fair is worth browsing even if you don't have deep pockets. (Keep your eyes peeled for celebs. Names as varied as Will Ferrell and Sylvester Stallone have been spotted.) But definitely make time for some of the more manageable, potentially more interesting, side fairs that have cropped up in the shadows of ABMB. Between December 1st and December 4th, Art Basel Miami Beach will host more than 260 galleries from around the world for the most important annual art event in the U.S.

Well-known artists and emerging talent will be showcased at various venues throughout Miami, including the Miami Beach Convention Center, which will house the Art Nova, Art Positions, and Art Kabinett portions of the festival.

Advance tickets for Art Basel are available via Ticketmaster. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach with no service charge. The theater box office is open Tuesday-Saturday from 12-5pm. South Beach's high season officially begins this weekend with the annual Art Basel Miami Beach extravaganza, bringing hordes of pretty people to this thin barrier island off the Atlantic coast of Florida. Newspaper travel sections are filled with images of the young, fashionable, and childless frolicking in the sun, but the beauty of Miami Beach is that there's room for everybody to have a good time. Pamela Anderson arrives at Art Basel in Miami Beach with photographer friend David LaChapelle in a T-shirt and no pants. LaChapelle shot Anderson for a film featured in the Elton John "Red Piano" concerts in Las Vegas; this year in Art Basel he presented an exhibit called "Jesus Is My Homeboy."

Cityfile dismissed the celebrity guests at Art Basel as "decoration," bearing no significance to how the festival's really doing at what it's supposed to do--sell art. If so, stars were still willing to show up and look good for the cameras. Beyonce and Jay-Z took in a few galleries--furnishing one of their places together, perhaps? And Kirsten Dunst took a bunch of girlfriends to South Beach with her, before ditching them at a party to hit on Tom Brady. We had no idea he was into art!

Even The New York Times got in on the act by following their version of a tabloid star to the show, musician Malcolm McLaren, who presented his own video project to an adoring crowd. Another star presenter who made sure to be seen: Marilyn Manson, who showed up his bloody paintings and his new post-Evan Rachel Wood girlfriend.

OMG! Art Basel started yesterday but there aren't any missed connections for it yet? Let's face it, you can admire the W Models but you aren't going to be painting beautiful pictures with them this weekend. There's always this sad sack, in case you like works in progress.

Twist Bar: This South Beach institution has something for everyone in its seven bars, though it's dangerous for scarves. 1057 Washington Ave.

The Fontainebleau: Sure, you've already missed its grand opening, but this newly reopened hotel is still the place to see and be seen, even if you can't get in. 4441 Collins Ave.

Recession or not, the art world soldiers on! Art Basel Miami Beach officially opens Thursday but the so-called satellite events are already underway in Wynwood and the rest of Miami.

There are about a billion suggestions for what's happening and where you should be, but if we were flying to South Beach tonight, we'd be plotting our course to Olaf Breuning’s Sand Sculpture in front of the Sagamore Hotel. It's like a sand castle... only art!

Just because there's a global financial meltdown on doesn't mean Art Basel Miami Beach is going to be any less faaah-bulous this year. And while the event technically runs December 4-7, pre- and post-festival fun means you might as well spend the first third of the month in South Florida.
