The stopover allows you to have a quick taste of Tahiti without blowing $10,000 on some ritzy over-water bungalow. And because many business travelers on the route and others curious about French Polynesia have spring for the deal, the airline is extending it through August 31.

What you do is tack another $1 onto your airfare for flights on Air Tahiti Nui from LA to either Sydney or Auckland and you'll get a layover long enough to sample the area, and perhaps stay over a few days. President Obama is certainly concerned about the economic situation here at home, but his worries are mostly focused on houses, money, and stocks—not on filling hotels full of tourists. However, that is the worry of French Polynesia's President Oscar Temaru. He’s calling the current tourism situation in the island nation “catastrophic.”

President Temaru has told lawmakers that hotel occupancy has been dismal, with some days seeing only a 20 percent occupancy rate. Temaru is close to naming a new tourism minister, who is going to have a lot of work ahead of him as well as a lot of sleepless nights. Hey, at least you can get a good spot by the pool, right?

You shouldn't let those 4's fool you, but this Air Tahiti Nui promotion is still pretty nice. For less than $1000 all-in (once you tack on the taxes that aren't included in the advertised fare), you can fly round-trip from New York to Auckland and even tack on a free one-night stopover in Papeete that includes lodging. They probably put you up in a crap hotel in Papeete, but it's still kind of cool. Sale ends tomorrow.

They're also currently running a decent deal between LAX and Auckland for $848 pre-tax. That's not a whole lot less than a sample fare we pulled up on Fiji's Air Pacific, but Air Tahiti Nui seems to have a better reputation anyway.

Restrictions are usually a given when airlines dare to charge you just an arm for a nice vacation. But Air Tahiti Nui's latest deal, a $600-ish round-trip from LAX to Papeete, Tahiti, is really all business.

The price is an approximate $200-400 savings over average prices on Air Tahiti Nui (or much more when compared to Qantas' fares), but check out the fine print. You've only got three days left to book it, and you must return from Papeete on February 5. You get a whopping choice of two departure dates: January 27 or January 28. It's a healthy discount, but the rules kinda kill the romance if you were hoping to take a date.

It's an open secret that Air Tahiti Nui is a great way to reach Australia from the U.S., and especially from the East Coast, where at least one connection is required anyway. Their fares are often lower than Qantas', their planes are often less crowded, and they offer a free stopover in Tahiti. Plus, they won't mind if you go after a mile-high club membership with your "lover."

The above bizarre promotion is being run around a limited sale: fly non-stop to Papeete, Tahiti, from either Los Angeles or New York on a handful of dates. To qualify, you must present a valid credit card and shadowy male companion at the time of booking. Should your lover not appear shadowy enough, you can swap him for a substitute at the nearest Tahitian embassy or perhaps, in New York at least, at the Jekyll & Hyde Club.
