Camping In Madagascar: No Penguins Here

Sometimes, you just need to go somewhere where you can get away from everyone. (We're looking at you, Christian Bale.) As we sit at our desks annoyed by Griffin the Loud Talker one cube over, we're dreaming of a departure to a far-distant locale, somewhere way off the beaten path. Say... Madagascar.

Don't be alarmed by the political protests currently going on in its capital of Antananarivo. Much of the country is protected forest or beach, which means a lot of wildlife to spot -- and with such a young industry, a camping trip is probably the best way to make sure your visit leaves as little a trace as possible.

We're digging the Mandrare River Camp outside of Fort Dauphin. Its six tents get light and hot water from solar panels, and morning and night visits into the local rain forests are included. All-in packages start at $3800 for a tent share -- and just like that, we no longer feel like screaming at the (nonexistent) Jaunted lighting crew.

There's a kid in everyone that loves animated movies. Come on, when the tiger starts crying big tiger tears, it's hard to not feel bad for him even if he's just some lines on paper, or in the case of DreamWorks, several thousands of dollars worth of highly engineered lines crafted by a computer. Take your favorite kid to see Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa today.

In this sequel to the popular first film of the same name, all the New York Zoo animals find themselves marooned on the island of Madagascar. The penguins (leave it to the suits!) put together a an old crashed plane that gets the gang there--but also gets them stuck. On Madagascar they encounter their ancestors and species relatives for the first time. Voices include Jada Pinkett Smith, Ben Stiller, Sacha Baron Cohen and Chris Rock among others.

Apparently things were getting a little too comfortable for the racers because this week the producers jump in with a brilliant new twist: the Intersection. Its a new challenge for the race and forces groups of frienemies to work together. Will the Barbies be forced to work together with their mortal enemies Lyn and Karlyn? Will the Cho Brothers stop being so gosh-darn lovable? Would coal-mining Dave and Mary make it to the pit stop in time to avoid elimination after coming in last a week ago? Some of you are probably wondering how we've been limiting ourselves to a single picture of an animal per day here on the site. Well, we've been trying to control ourselves, but those days of restraint are over.

Today we present to you belgianchocolate's photostream on Flickr. Her photos of the fauna in Madagascar are just incredible and in no way related to the piss poor CGI movie of the same name.

The picture above is a lemur, a primate that lives only on the island of Madagascar.

Bonus Lemur trivia: Peter Gabriel's song "Shock the Monkey" was originally titled "Shock the Lemur".
