Most people think the Sundance Film Festival is all about the best in independent film, but its really just an excuse for celebs to party while wearing cute cold weather gear.
Now that the fest is in full swing, Main Street in Park City, Utah is crawling with celebrities. Just yesterday, Demi Moore, who's in town to promote her latest film, Another Happy Day), had a romantic lunch with hubby Ashton Kutcher. At the same time, Chris and Liam Hemsworth were getting snowboarding lessons down the street and Kate Bosworth was walking the red carpet for the 2011 Creative Coalition Spotlight Initiative Awards. ]]>
The notorious British street artist Banksy premiered his first film, Exit Through The Gift Shop, at Sundance this week. But, true to form, he didn't allow it to be listed in the fest's catalog nor did he tell anyone about its place on the schedule until last week. This is no surprise coming from an artist who keeps his identity and whereabouts under tighter wraps than most people in the witness protection program.
The film is about street art, but it is also about Terry Guetta a.k.a Mr. Brain Wash, a successful commercial street artist. In the '90s Terry was obsessed with capturing his life on video. At the same time, he was hanging out with his cousin, the street artist Space Invader, who worked nights in France and Los Angeles covering the town with pixel aliens. Terry quickly became obsessed with street artists and, suddenly, his two passions combined. This meant for the first time someone was capturing the best graffiti artists in the world (including Banksy) working. The problem was, Terry's film sucked, even though he tried really hard, he just couldn't pull it off. This is where Banksy stepped in and decided to turn Terry's footage into Exit Through the Gift Shop. ]]>
Katie Holmes is the talk of the Sundance Film Festival this year, and not just because she's flying solo in Park City, UT, but also because she has two films in the fest that are getting a lot of buzz. Yesterday, Katie was spotted at the premiere of The Romantics at the Library Centre with co-star Josh Duhamel and his wife Fergie. Kate also took some time yesterday to pose for photos with one of the film's other co-stars, Elijah Wood, who reminisced about filming the movie last year on Long Island. "One lunch break," Elijah said, "instead of going to lunch, we decided to have a party at one of the holding houses. There was a little iPod dock, and we played very loud music and danced. And the girls were amazing."
The Romantics centers on Laura (Holmes), the maid of honor at the wedding of her former college roommate Lila (Anna Paquin ) and the love of her life Tom (Duhamel). The wedding provides the backdrop for a reunion of their friends who had the nickname The Romantics. But, The Romantics isn't the only film Katie's touting at Sundance this year. ]]>
The Sundance Film Festival, which begins on Jan, 21 in Park City, Utah, is only a few days away but don’t fret if you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, you still have plenty of options. Right now, we're a little preoccupied with our summer cocktails and our river tubing spots to begin thinking about the upcoming ski season. Yet we did come out of our summertime haze for just a moment to read this press release about the first funicular to ever open at a North American ski resort. The lucky ski resort? Deer Valley in Park City, Utah.
The funicular, which is nestled at the base of the mountain at The St. Regis Deer Crest Resort’s Snow Park Building and is adjacent to Deer Valley’s Snow Park Lodge, ascends 500 vertical feet in just 90 seconds to the primary hotel building.
The funicular cars will have panoramic windows that are tinted and UVA and UVB-protected. They will also be heated (with AC operating in the summer) with leather seats and a separate area for luggage. Fifteen well-heeled (booted?) skiers can fit into these cars. But unlike other funiculars in the U.S., the Deer Valley cars will function independently so that "demand can be met at the base and top terminals."
The ride is free and the St. Regis is hoping you'll try the funicular on a lark and then of course, pop into their hotel to check out Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s new J&G Grill, a wine bar, or the Remède Spa, or the ski beach overlooking Deer Hollow ski run or the outdoor terrace with its 40-foot long firewall.
A 500-ton crane is installing the funicular as we speak but the St. Regis Resort won't be open until later this year.
