When it comes to DC, you can do the whole National Mall thing. Or you can do like we did and leave the museums behind for a drive through the country. We jetted out to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the antiquing haven of Sperryville.
Now, we weren't on a quest for an old tea set. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) We were looking for a nice grilled rib eye, the kind you can get at Thornton River Grille, a leisurely two hour drive from downtown DC.
Set in the same refurbished historic building as the Sperryville Corner Store, the restaurant is the perfect spot for a long hearty lunch. The Seared Tuna Salad looked good, but we ordered an off-menu steak frites. Our 14-ounce rib eye was cooked right to temperature and the fries were heavenly. A bottle of surprisingly tasty Rappahannock Cellars Meritage made the meal.
