Men in Italy must have a real ogling problem. First a women-only B&B opens in Florence and now a stretch of beach between Rimini and Riccione on the Adriatic coast has been declared "girls only." Beach Number 134 is just a slice of the 50-mile stretch of coastline linking Rimini to Riccione, but thanks to entrepreneur Fausto Ravaglio, it is beach with a twist.
Last week's opening was attended by Karima Adebibe, the new Lara Croft, and the beach is complete with stereotyped attractions like manicures, aerobics, and fresh veggies instead of fries.
Ironically, while the fitness instructors and the beach DJs are all women, the beach's owner hired a male lifeguard because, as he put it,
You clearly need a man to save women in the sea. It’s a question of muscles.
How progressive. An Italian newspaper, La Stampa, has already referred to the week-old beach as a "beach harem". Is the Pink Beach a harmless shore-side alternative, or a hideous anachronism? You decide.
