Clint Eastwood's Creating A Tsunami in Maui

While millions are dealing with a real disaster in Haiti, Clint Eastwood is staging a disaster in Hawaii for his new movie, "Hereafter." The director is in Maui this week filming scenes for the movie, which follows three characters: a blue-collar American, a French journalist and a London school boy, who are all trying to discover what may happen in the afterlife after being touched by death. The movie stars Matt Damon but, unfortunately for him, he isn't in any of the Hawaii shots.
The Maui scenes, filmed on Lahaina's Front St, will open the film and follow actress Cecile De France as she heads out to do some shopping when a tsunami hits. But, instead of flooding the streets of Maui to complete the scenes, the wall of water will be added later through CGI and the underwater scenes have already been completed in London. Yesterday, hundreds lined Front St while more than 60 extras ran from the "tsunami." It's not surprising that there were more on-lookers than actors on hand, considering this was the biggest production to hit Maui in nearly 20 years.

It's Summer Somewhere: Maui

As many of our readers (and, ahem, writers) battle winter temps, icy rain and dark afternoons this time of year, we thought we'd offer a little daily inspiration with our new "It's Summer Somewhere" series.
We'll kick things off with Maui, where today's high temperature is forecast to be a steamy 80 degrees. Head there this week and align your trip with the upcoming Surf & Sand 15K and 5K, next Sunday. Yep, that's right, you can go to the beach and still keep your resolution of staying fit. You'll have a week to rest up before the 9.3 mile run that's all been strategically arranged to take place downhill, ending in Lahaina with a big ol' luau.
Another awesome sight to take in right now in Maui is the annual winter migration of the humpback whales, who are making their trip from Alaska to Hawaii for their own winter getaways. Book a day trip on the ships of the Island Marine Institute, which have credentialed naturalists on board and live, underwater Whale Cams so passengers don't miss any of the action.
Aaaah, summer. It's only (officially) a mere five months away for most us--after we get back from Maui of course.
Related Stories:
· Visit Maui [Official Site]
· Surf & Sand 15K and 5K [Official Site]
· Island Marine Institute [Official Site]

Surfing in Hawaii :: Nancy Knows

We know that not everyone lives for the big waves. But it's safe to say those who love the water would like to at least try their hand at hanging ten. For them, there's the Nancy Emerson School of Surfing on Maui. Nancy has been teaching people of all ages to surf since 1973, and while she offers clinics for advanced riders, her beginner classes are some of the best around.

Nancy customizes programs for individuals, families, small groups and even hotel conventions. Students use new, soft surfboards, and class times depend on tides, waves and winds. Her students even receive a surfing diploma. Plus, this is one school that comes with a guarantee. According to Nancy, her method will transform and accelerate students' surfing ability. You've got her word on it.

Find it on our Hawaii Surf Schools Map.

Related Stories:
· Nancy Emerson School of Surfing [Official Site]
· Hawaii Surf Schools coverage [Jaunted]
· Maui Christmas [Jaunted]

MTV's Living Lahaina Is Better In the Real World

MTV's newest Hawaii based show is Living Lahaina, a psuedo surf reality show.
The show tries to use a Dukes of Hazard style narration, at least they did in the premiere episode, to tell the story of a half dozen Maui surf instructors. The first show featured a surf dude named "Gator" getting drunk, then angry at his girlfriend, then paddling Auau Channel, all in a night's work. Of course, Gator's early morning channel paddle blossomed into a full blown Cost Guard search for the lost reality surfer.
In any event, while the hot-bodied reality show may or may not hold your interest, it appears that the Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy, the show's backdrop, is a good place to learn to surf, if you find yourself on Maui.

I stood up the first time i got in the water.. my teacher was the big kahuna! after my first time i went 3 more times it was a blast!! and i got some sweet shots of myself surfing! Oh and all the boys are good looking too!

Oddly, we couldn't find an official website for the surf academy, but if you want to bother Gator for a surf lesson, and have plenty of cell minutes, call 808.662.4664.

Related Stories:
· Roayal Hawaiian Surf Academy Comments [Yahoo!]
· MTV's Living Lahaina Site [Official Site]
