Foreign Grocery Friday: The Pink Cuberdons of Ghent

When we travel, one of our favorite things to do is to pop into a local grocery store and check out the food products and candies we'd never find anywhere else. So we're trying out this new feature, Foreign Grocery Friday, where each week we'll feature some of our (and your) favorite overseas treats. Got a recommendation? Let us know!
When you think about Belgium, what food comes to mind? Odds are chocolate, right? Well, that's totally fine because duh—Belgium is huge in the edible ecstasy department, but don't rule out all the other lovely candies that color the rainbow, like the delicious bites called Cuberdons. These conical treats, also called "mini noses" and "priest hats," are specially slow-cooked to create a gooey interior, with a harder shell.
The taste: Mmmm raspberry. Yep, Cuberdons are raspberry-hued as well as raspberry-flavored. There's none of that dicey white chocolate flavor that comes with many raspberry sweets; these are 100% concentrated fruity scrumptiousness. Eat them whole, though, or risk getting the goopey center all over your fingertips...which you will then be tempted to lick clean in public. Ah yes—and there are many other flavors to sample, but raspberry is the recognized classic.

The City of Ghent is Becoming a Part-Time Vegetarian

Locales from Philly to Dubai are racing to attract the eco-conscious set by touting their environmentally-friendly eating, sleeping, shopping and transportation options, but Ghent, Belgium just took it to another level by becoming the first city go all-vegetarian once a week.
The picturesque Flemish town—best known for its medieval castles and cathedrals—has declared every Thursday a veggiedag (veggie day), when all residents and visitors are encouraged to go without meat in a nod to the overwhelming amount of greenhouse gasses emitted by livestock.
There won't be any bacon police roaming the streets (at least not yet), but government employees and politicians have agreed to abide by the meatless decree, and schoolchildren will be brought into the fold as well. The city is currently printing 90,000 "veggie street maps" to guide people towards vegetarian eateries.
Sounds like a great idea to us, and totally doable—as long as chocolate and beer are still allowed.
Related Stories:
· Belgian city plans 'veggie' days [BBC]
· Belgium travel coverage [Jaunted]
· World's Best Vegetarian Restaurants [Jaunted]
